Runnin' Rich

Guys I have this problem with my lude. I think the engine is running a little rich. It's kinda odd cuz my last engine did the same thing. There is lots of carbon that comes out of my exhaust. The back end of my car has lots of little black dots (carbon) all over it. I hit VTEC once in a while but not too often. I know that hitting VTEC does cause more carbon to come out but I don't hit it as much as I think. Is this normal or?

Hey, don't worry about it our cars run rich from the factory. I noticed after I installed my exhaust that alot more "soot" was present on the rear bumper and trunk. I don't think that there's alot you can do about it, you could adjust your car to run leaner via a VAFC, but you also risk running to lean and damaging your engine, I'd rather wash my car a little more often......

I look and see if you ever replaced your o2. After I did my swap i was running way rich. I knew it ran rich from the factory but i was just getting horrible gas milage. I replaced my o2 and i still run a little rich but very more reasonable.

That may also be the problem. After you replaced your O2, did you get better gas mileage as well?

BTW, a few days ago I got a check engine light. It came on like every other time I ran my car. Kinda wierd. I was thinking maybe it's cuz I need a new O2 sensor. Any ideas?

i had 80k on it and it was still my stock o2. i was getting like 160 miles to my tank (city). My check engine light used to come on at random times. Once i replaced my o2 i went back to about 230 per tank and my check engine light still comes on but it isn't radom. it will go on like when i am doing like 30 in 4th and bairly touch the gas. For some reason it always comes on either when i shift and bairly hit the gas or just accelerate at low rpm, but always goes out once i turn off the car.

What mods are you running dude? I do just under 10L per 100Km, ie 10L to 62miles which is roughly your 230 per tank so I wonder if it's safe to say my sensor's ok? hmm

I'm putting it down to my jdm ecu at the mo...

It could be. I found out mine problem was the o2 when I hooked up an air fuel gauge, it said i was running lean as f***, but I could just smell that I was running rich at stop lights. I replaced the o2 and am still running a little rich, just not a rediculous rich.

Its normal. You could get a FPR and actually lean it just a little bit, like around 1lb or so for a small gain.
