To Run or Not To Run

Okay, I'm almost hittin 70K, but since i just got the car i want to run it at the track to see my times. I don't know if the belts were changed or not.... and this is something i plan to do very soon... should i run or wait til my belts are changed?

Also here's my list of things to replace as the 70k maintenance.
Timing belt
balance belt
a/c belt
power steering belt
water pump
2 tensioner bearings
1 gasket
9 seals
cv boots
and add skunk 2 cam gears

do you guys have any idea how much it'll cost? i'm still trying to find a place that'll do all of em at the same time. thanks for your opinions

Me too. But on my old car, an 86 Shelby Turbo Charger, I changed the timing belt and when I took it off it broke in my hand!

If you throw a belt you'll only hurt your battery?? If you break your timing belt, you'll be replacing more than your battery, try a few valves, maybe your whole engine if you're unlucky.

Just run it. You'll be fine. I constantly beat the piss out of my car, track and streets and I'm at 130k. I have about 60k on my t belt and it looks new as well, altough I need to replace it because I need to replace my rattling tensioner as well...

well, finally ran tonite... i sucked... my first run ever! 16.8 was the best... i was only able to run twice cause there were a lot of people. Anyway, the major problem i saw was the crazy wheel spin. I tried launching at higher rpms 5500 like most people said and i tried running at lower 3,000... i was able to get more grip right away on the lower rpms but didn't help on the 1/4... only a few micro seconds, not enough to get me below 16.8. I got stock everything except for intake. Hooo-hum.. .... need more practice

i went to honda for my 100k mile maintenance. here is what i got done over a course of 7 hours (yes, i had to drive around a civic the whole day )

Timing belt
balance belt
A/C belt
power steering belt
water pump
Fuel Filter
Oil change - they just did it anyways, free
All oil seals

the total bill was $938.07 . but i guess u pay for OEM parts and the "OEM labor".....hehehe. this is all backed by warrenty, if i have any problems with the seals or gaskets they replaced, they will fix it free of charge. i also got an estimate for my CV boots and they wanted $348.00 total for parts and labor. this is Bale Honda in Little Rock so im sure its cheaper at other Honda's on the East and West coast.

hope this helped,
tim

Oh, you can't? Go put a cut on your timing belt and start your engine. Go run it hard until it breaks on you. Then come back and tell me that you can't bend your valves with a broken timing belt... I know from first had experience that a broken t belt will bend valves on Hondas. On Toyotas, that's a different story. No belt valves. Don't be mad at me because of your ignorance.

Tell me how are you going to hurt your batter with a broken t belt? But what ever, batteries are still cheaper than valves.

You said you can't screw your motor up with broken t belt. Go prove me wrong. What idiot would run there car with a broken timing belt? Hmm, you can't. That was why I said to put "A" cut on there, just so it can hold for it to start. I never said I ran a car with a broken belt. The car dies as soon as it breaks. I said I've experienced belts breaking, not specificly on my car...

You said you won't hurt anything but the battery if you throw "A" belt. You didn't specify which one. I assumed you were talking about ANY belt. Timing belt doesn't affect the battery. Ok, you have a dead battery when your alternator belt breaks. I've never experienced this.

You still want to argue with me that a broken t belt won't screw up your motor? Prove it to me. I'm sure anyone on this board will tell you that it will...

Also, why would ludethugs be so concerned about running his car when he's near his scheduled belt change?

timing belt breaks, valves stop moving. piston goes up, smacks the piss out of valves. its not that complicated.

Yeah, I feel you, w/ the high cost of parts & labor at Honda dealerships--don't we all? It's a good peace of mind knowing that everything's backed up by warranty, and knowing that MOST Honda techs are knowledgeable people (MOST, hehehe).
