Reverse light switch (lights always on)

Ok, so the title is a bit misleading, but the jist is accurate. My problems started when my reverse lights didn't work at all. I ran the usual diagnostics and found the reverse light switch (on the transmission) to be bad. I went to my local advance and ordered a replacement, and promptly installed it. After installation, I put the key in the ignition and put the gear into reverse and noticed that my reverse light was on..... hooray, the problem is solved... time for a beer. The next day, early in the morning at 3:00 PM, I went to go get some movies. As I backed out of my parking space, I noticed my fine handiwork in the reflection of another car. Ahhh, my reverse lights work...... put the car into first, and glance up at the reflection.....my reverse lights are still on........SH&*....! I assume that I have a bad switch. Well that theory lost credibility when I went through all the gears and found that the lights went off when I shifted into 5th gear. So to sum it up, my reverse lights are on in every gear except 5th. Anyone got any ideas? I'm going to spend some quality time with the manual, but if anyone has run into this problem before, please give me a shout.

Ok, I think I may have found the problem. For some reason, my reverse light switch doesn't have a washer between it and the tranny. I think this dimensional disparity may be the culprit. I just thought I should update everyone since PO seems so interested in this post
