Removing Steering Wheel

Hi,

I just bought my first prelude, it's a 1994 JDM Si V-Tec - very nice.

It doesn't have the airbag so I was thinking of changing the steering wheel - thing is - although this may seem like a stupid question - how do you get the original wheel off? There are no obvious screw or bolt covers to remove - any tips?

Cheers,

Chris

Congratulations on the car -- same as mine! (You have 4WS?)

Getting the steering wheel off when you're airbagless is a piece of cake. All you have to do is pry out the emblem (use a couple of small screwdrivers and a protective towel so as not to scratch the thing), and the nut is under there. Job done.

If you have 4WS, be careful: the front main steering angle sensor is just beneath the steering wheel. It turns when there is pressure applied to steering wheel, but the wheel turns without the sensor otherwise. You probably don't want the sensor to move relative to the steering wheel position. Otherwise, you'll be seeing your 4WS light coming on, and the computer will report a code 20.

Hi Simon,

No I don't have the 4WS, my final choice came down to two cars one with and one without, however the one without had some minor dents and a lot of rear inside edge tyre wear so I skipped it (not wanting to buy a car with a 4WS problem).

Thanks for your help with the wheel.

Cheers,

Chris
