Removing AC, any suggestions, for sale too...

yep, so I decided to go ahead and remove it. Its pretty much dead weight, cause I never use it. Plus my belt squeaks, because I removed my belt for like 4 months, and then when i wanted AC, it sgueaks now, I guess from a bad clutch.

Anyway, any suggestions on taking the system out? You have to take the bumber off right? What about the ac stuff under the dash, or does that have to do with the heat too?

And by the way all of the stuff I take out will be for sale, the whole system works, and blows COLD air, its just I never use it. It has 85k on it, so its in good clean condition.

Im hoping for around a 50lb weight reduction.

hey, I think jsmooney fixed his problem, but pm him in case he is looking for a compressor, otherwise be sure to list this in the classifieds, someone must be in need of a compressor.

When i removed mine, i didn't need to take off my bumper. Beware though, i was told releasing the freon into the atmosphere is illegal and you might need to go somewhere that refils it so they can empty it for you. Once you have it empty, it's just a bunch of bolts to undo. You will need a new shorter belt. Mine was 39" long, but i have an aem alternator pulley.

If you remove the evaporator you'll need to get the part to replace it from a S model so the air goes from your blower unit to your heater unit and out through the vents.

yeah, I can't remember exactly which year they switched from Freon to R-134a, but if yours is either, and especially the former, please don't just release it into the atmosphere, places can't be charging THAT much to drain your system.

me?

actually releasing the stuff is a BIG but i would be more scared it would harm me in some way when it was coming out. Just take it somewhere to get it drained, they prob do it for free and no worries about getting hurt ot getting caught!

I removed mine. Now i have a bumper full of my aluminum radiator. Sweet.

Im not sure if it made a difference in power but it certainly cleared alot of space under the hood.

Yo Forbidden, what part are you talking about?? My heater works fine. But i have always had an S model.

The S models that didn't come with a/c had the evaporator replaced with a special duct. If you're gonna remove the evaporator and still wish to retain the use of your fan and heater, you will need this duct.

hmmm, i removed the evaporator and my heater still works. Wierd. I didnt know that some S models did not have AC. I thought they all did. I guess you learn something every day. So what you guys are saying is that there is a little fitting that connects the 2 pipes that come from the firewall??

Not, not from the firewall, between the fan and the heater core.

When you say you removed the evaporator did you open the black plastic casing and remove the evaporator core from it? Or did you just remove the casing entirely? If you remove the casing you'll have a big gap between the blower and the heater core so the air won't go through the heater core and your passengers will be getting all the air from the blower on their feet. Since S model, without the A/C option, don't have the evaporator there's a plastic duct instead of the evaporator. Though if you said you removed it and it worked fine you probably removed the evaporator core and put the casing back in the car. That should work but if you're gonna sell your evaporator, a buyer might prefer to get the casing too.
