dont know if theres an average... I would say probaly after 200k it would be time.
I am at 180,000 am I'm starting to feel the wear on the engine.
the real trick is to make sure that you change the oil at a reasonable interval and dont over rev the engine because that when the bearing spin, and of course make sure that timing belt was swapped withing 80k to 90k depending on how brave you are you could change sooner or later.

with you being in a really hot climate the cooling system is very important too

250k if you work the crap out of your engine. My friend has 260k and it's still running great. He will need a new oil pan gasket and 3rd gear synchro but thats about it.

you almost better off buying a used f22b or used h23 and drop it in.. re-building the motor would go over 1k and that's just parts.. think about the labor involved.. it's insane.. not telling you what to do.. but i rebuilt mine back to stock spec and it wasn't cheap.. i did it for my own knowledge and for class so i don;t mind.. but if i didn;t have all the machinery and time.. it would have been cheaper to run out and get a used motor and srop it in

i think i've posted a lot on my re-build.. not sure.. but i'm sure a ton would turn up if you ran a search
