rear defrosters

hey guys, im taking the tint off my 92, and after i have already peeled the tint i still have to scratch the glue off with a razor blade. my question is will i mess up my defrosters(the little brown lines that go across the rear window about every inch and 1/2)? do you think i should leave it up to shop who is putting in my new tint, or should i have a go at it? i know some cars have the lines IN the window, but in my car it seems that they can be scratched. any light you can shed on my problem will be greatly appriciated! thanks

if you scratch those lines it will ruin your defroster. they are just painted on.

I agree.

I strongly suggest you know what you are doing before you mess it up. Most tint install places use either a fine grit sand paper or a soft scour pad to get the glue off. They just run the length of the lines that way they don't mess it up.

If they do.... they have to replace it. And a new rear window is close to 400 installed

If you mess up your defroster, you can buy repair kits that come with sections of the thin conductive metal on sticker sheets (much like vinyl sticker's with the transfer sheet and all). Then you just line up the new strip with the rest of it and make sure that it touches the existing defroster strip.

I dont know where to buy it (I would imagine any chain auto supplier.. AutoZone, etc.) but I have seen it on car shows on TNN... like Shadetree Mechanic aka Crank+Chrome.

if you take it off yourself, get a plastic 'razor blade' or scraper. it is less likely to remove the coating.

I asked about that stuff Tyler. My rear defroster hasn't worked since I've owned the car. Every place I have been to all said the same thing. It won't last. The conductive strips tend to get really hot and all the tint places said it will burn a hole in the tint film.
