randomly not starting... fuel filter bad?

Over the last 6 months or so, about once a month the car would randomly not start. Cranked over fine but nothing doing. I would try it again 10 minutes later and it would start right up. Electrical system is in good shape - the battery, alternator, plugs and wires are all less than a year old.

Now, in the last month this has happened 4 more times. I'll try it several times, then leave, come back 15 minutes later and it will start right up. It never stalls while driving. I'm due for service and I believe the fuel filter should be changed then (although I may try it myself). Does that sound symptomatic of a clogged filter or do you think it's something else?

Sounds like main relay to me. Fuel filter wouldn't likely be sporadic.

I agree. A clogged fuel filter would cause performance problems while driving not only with startups.

It has been hot lately - why would this fail when it gets hot?

The Main Relay sometimes dosnt work when it gets hot because it has dry solder joints which expand and "detatch" from the board, interrupting the operation of it. The Main Relay controls the fuel pump, if the relay goes the fuel pump dosnt pump and so no fuel pressure.

I just had this exact problem with my Si. I went to honda and picked up a fuel pump relay for $50 and it starts perfectly now. Sounds like you got the same thing.

Ya I just did a search and I think you guys are right. If I remember correctly, I didn't hear a click, although I didn't know to listen for one - just kind of remember it being quieter than normal. Now I just have to decide whether to get dirty and try soldering it

Thanks
