ran out of gas today

s0 the gas light had been on, i live 3 miles away from work, so i just went home. the gas light went off halfway there so i figured "okay, maybe it was wrong." dammit, right as the road flattened out to get to the neighborhood the car started sputtering like crazy and when i made the turn, i floored it and it did nothing, i rolled to a stop. called my parents to come get me. (we lived about a minute away) after about 5 mins, i cranked up the car and it did fine for about 20 seconds, then sputtering so i put it in 4th and just kinda coasted most of the way home. i put some gas from the lawnmower gas can (i know not good, but you gotta do what you gotta do) in the tank and am going to fill up tomorrow. did i mess up anything just by running out of gas?

just curious, but when does your gas light come on, does it come on after the last little tiny bar on your gas meter goes out? cause i've had ALL bars out, but still not gas light... i wonder if my gas light is broken

My gas light starts to come on every now and then when I have like 2 bars left, then keeps going on and off with one bar left...and then when I have no bars left it will stay on for most of the time, turning off for maybe 10 seconds every now and then but then turning back on.

this has been covered before, but I beleive its a common problem to have the gas light not work. Both of my 4th gens had non working gas lights. It's not the bulb, but the sending unit I guess, I dunno. All I know is my gas light never turned on in either 92 for the 4 years I've had them, except for ONCE, like a month ago when I pulled into my friends driveway, but only half way and at an angle so I was 3 wheeling it and my light came on. I was like HOLY CRAP MY GAS LIGHT! and I took a picture. Hasn't come on since

My gas light works perfectly, always turns on with around 10L left. I usually run the car a bit after it turns on and when I fill it up I put about 53L (it's a 60L tank for those who don't know). Also when it turns on I usually have only 1 or 2 bars left. Though I use my tripmeter to tell me how far I can still go without a fillup

My gas light starts to come on when I am at 1 bar... it starts out very dimly lit, and gets brighter and brighter the less gas I have left

you put two stroke gas in??? as in fuel mixed with twostroke oil?? or do you have a fourstroke mower. cause that could be really bad.

The gasoline I put in my mower comes right out of the gaspump (87 octane). I walk to the gas station with the gas can, fill her up, and bring her home. If you do the same you've got nothing to worry about.

jsmooney, probably not, but sometimes when there's no gas left, the pick up will suck in whatever's at the bottom of the tank, like dirt. Really no way to tell unless something weird starts happening with your fuel system, or you take everything apart to see. I'm banking that everything is fine, just don't do it repeatedly. I only say that because I'm currently flirting with my gas light, trying to see how many miles i can squeeze out of a tank, I always fold under pressure and fill up, and every time the pump shuts off at aroun 14 gallons, 1.9 short from full supposedly.

Well there's 2 gas filters that the dirt has to pass through so I doubt running out of gas is gonna mess up something but yeah don't do it all the time for the hell of it

1.9 gallons left is about 8L pretty much like me I always fill up when I have about 7-8L left

Yeah, and just fyi, the last 2 gallons are never used... So that's why you never fill up more than 14. You're not supposed to be able to use the last 2 gallons, unless you're on a very steep incline I believe.. like very steep, and even then I don't think you're supposed to be able to , they're 'reserve' for nothing. LoL.

When you fill 1.9 gal shallow, you're on empty, that's it.

everyones gas light will come on at different times. not all pumps are the same. they all wont have the same amount of corrosion built up on them and the springs on the levers arent the same strength.

its never good to run your car out of gas. you suck up all the junk down in the bottom of the tank which can either clog the fuel pump filter, if it gets pass that it can clog your fuel filter, and if it gets pass that it can clog one or more injectors. and even though you are experiencing any changes yet, it sometimes takes a while for that junk to get situated to clog whatever it is.

something to think about.

but besides all that... fast riding and F* the police! haha
