Radiator replacement

Hi,

Am in the middle of replacing a blown radiator in a JDM BB1 4th gen prelude. Old rad is out and the new one's arrived.

The new rad is twice the thickness of the old (across the cooling section) and has two extra pipe connections at its base. Otherwise, the top and bottom pipe and fan fittings are the same and it'll fit in the same place as the old...

What are the two extra pipes for (they aren't connected to the main coolant flow) ?

...and...

Why the extra thickness ? Will this cause me any problems ? (figuring not but its best to check first !)

Cheers !!

i could be way off on this, but if the two extra fittings are rather small, i believe they are for an automatic transmission. if you have a manual they are pointless, just ignore them. they are on a lot of replacement rads just so one part fits both auto and manual. as for the extra thickness... did you get a high performance radiator or an oem replacement? if you stepped up to a fluidyne or something like that the extra thickness enables better cooling.

Yeah, don't stress about the two extra pipes. Just cover it up with caps.

Thickness? Depends on the quality of the material.

Radiator was an OEM replacement sourced from a parts co. in the UK. I did request a JDM suitable part but didn't specify manual or auto, to be fair to the supplier.

So, consensus is the extra thickness is a bonus and the extra pipes aren't to worry about... Brilliant, thanks !

Will crack on then; flush the system, cap the extra pipes and get the 'lude back on the road

I have found that aftermarket suppliers only make rads for autos... they work in both, why make both?

Okay, the deed is done (well almost)...

A few points tho:

1) it's a heck of a lot easier to remove the lower pipe and thermostat cover, fit them to the new rad and then install the rad in the car. (I note that 5th gens have the A/C hose, by the manifolds, moved to directly behind the bumper which should help enormously !!)

2) the thicker rad means that two of the driver's side fan bolts are around 5mm too short. The rest fits fine tho.

3) I sealed the extra pipes for AT fluid cooling (?) by trimming their ends off, flattening a portion and folding it over to form a crimp.

Right, what's next.....!?
