Purpose of this part?

Just wondering what the purpose of this part is.
#6 Cap, Breather

I had tranny work done a few months ago, and when I got it back and inspected it, there wasn't anything there. I put a vaccuum hose cap on it and thought all was well. Now reading it say Breather, I'm starting to worry that the cap I put on may not be good.

Not sure if its related to or because of this, but I noticed a leak today from the tranny area. Most of the tranny case appears to be "moist", with the majority of it on or near the shift arm cover. Not sure what to do cause I'm not quite possitive how long its been like this. I have an autocross event tomorrow, and am starting to doubt or not if I should be ok to run it. Open to advice and suggestions.

Thanks

Mine has a cap on it. Its not tight. Just enough to stay on. Its just for hot air to escape when the gearbox warms up. The cap is to keep dust from getting in.

i dont know whats the actual purpose...but that is the spot where you can easily insert new tranny fluid....its a "secret" spot to refill your tranny housing without having the long tube to refill it. i changed my tranny oil like 2 months ago and used that spot to refill it. i guess the cap is to prevent dirt from going into the tranny housing..yea
