Pulleys

I went to have a look at some AEM accessory pulleys and the guy
at the shop said they are useless unless you get a smaller crank pulley. I've never heard this before.
I thought it you have the bigger accessory pulleys they are spinning slower which takes less drag on the engine. Why would you also need the crank pulley undersized. I know it helps but is it necessary?

This shop is trying to milk you out of more money for the sake of thier own profit while sacrificing the reliavlty and life expectancy of your car. SATY AWAY FROM THEM THEY NOT NOT WHAT THEY ARE SPEAKING OF

you will notice some slight gains with smaller acc pully's, across the entire power band expect to feel better low end pull. If you already have the standerd I/E/H then they are your next bolt on step
Out cars have a harmonic dampener on the crank pully, most aftermarket underdrive crank pullies do not have this dampener and without it you can shorten the life of your engine drastically.

This guy is full of **** stay away

This shop is usually good, (they recently did a H22a Civic swap )
thats why I thought hard about it. Engineering theory even proves them wrong: v (vel) = r (radius) x w (rotational speed) so if the radius of the pulley increases the rotational speed should decrease to keep a constant belt speed velocity (v).

Correct me if I'm wrong:
Wouldn't the HONDA accessory pullys have their own dampeners built into them, so by replacing them w/ aftermarket stuff you may also be harming the engine. I would think the accesory pullys are also responsible for damping.

there was a bigg long arguement about htis already and it comes down to this the factory crank pully is a 2 peices although it looks like one big solid peice it isn't there is rubber between the 2 peices that do the dampening the acc pullys are one peice solid

that is why AEM only makes acc pullys they dont' want to mess around with the harmicly balanced crank pully

well speak of the devil , i was just looking at my next mod since i have the standard i/h/e now and was looking at pullies. i was gonna go with the Unorthodox full pulley set which comes with the crank pulley too. do these have the harmonic dapeners on them already? i read the long write up when i ran a search for pulleys but it didnt say if the Unorthodox Pullies had the dapener or not.

so should i go with the Unorthodox pullies or a fuel pressure regulator and guage for my next mod? im really looking for power but engine maintenance is important to me. if im only gonna get 3-4 hp from pullies, forget it.

take care,
tim

there was a big long discussion on a 3rd gen eclipse board about UD pulleys and crank pulleys in general. i think the general consensus is that UD is a shady company and refuses to admit its mistakes and fix their problems.

I would suggest fuel. If you are not going some sort of FI igintion upgrades are almost pointless IMO.

DO NOT get the Crank pulley. As mentioned you WILL loose the facotry harmonic balancer. Yes this is the biggest power gainer of the pulley but it depends on what you want: Engine Life vs. Engine Power.

You will only get 3-4 hp if you lucky from the AEM pulley set, so if your not satisfied with that don't bother.

I have never heard a big problem of the AEM's ripping belts before, but it did happen to me so maybe it is a problem..

And another thing if you have a pretty powerful aftermarket system you are going to see some serious drain. I could sit there idling before and have the tunes going for maybe 5 mins before the lights would REALLY start discoballing.

BTW: I am *currently running* an AEM P/S pulley and an Unorthodox Alternator pulley with a custom belt as I removed A/C. If you have any questions about the pulleys ask me, I have play around with them quite a bit.

* Denotes: This was the setup I was running before blowing my engine, and the setup I will be running after the rebuild!

The harmonic balancer? ahhhhhh you dont need that! It does nothing, honda just put it there for the fun of it.

I personally would never remove it, its funny how people do things to try to gain the slightest HP.
