If the engine is switched off, can you select all gears or does the problem only seem to occur when the engine is running? If the engine is running, can the other gears be selected?

When the engine is off I can select all the gears...but not when the engine is on.

I'm having the same problem I have to try about 5+ times to get it to go into reverse before it actually will.

^^ I have nothing to offer for why you can do it with car off but not car on. However I also have some difficulty the first time getting into reverse, with the clutch engaged (pedal in) I try to put it in R and have no luck, so what's worked for me is a disengage the clutch, renengage it and try again and I'm always able to get into reverse.

Reverse gear can be particularly tricky, as it has no synchromesh. Therefore, both the actual gear (i.e., the car) and the layshaft must be stopped for reverse to be engaged.

If you're idling with the clutch engaged (pedal up), then immediately depress the clutch pedal and try to select reverse, you'll have problems. Why? Because the layshaft is still moving at (well, close to) its idling speed. You only need to wait a couple of seconds after disengaging the clutch before you try to select reverse, and then you should be OK.

(You might still have a problem finding a place where the gear teeth match up. Sometimes, I have to spin the layshaft three or four times before I find a spot where I can select reverse!)

I also find that the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts can be tricky when the car is cold. I usually double declutch these shifts until the oil in the gearbox starts to come up to temperature.

I have the same problem in the morning, but only in 1st gear. It happened every once in a while back when i had the stock shifter, but a lot more often every since i put the 4bbiden ss. I found a quick way to go around that tho. Any time i m in neutral and need to get to 1st gears i simply put it in 2nd first, and right up to first ( while i still got the clutch in of course and while not moving of course), and it always falls in smooth, i guess its a way to go around a glitch if u wanna call it like that. It only does from time to time now, but it became a reflex now, when i m at the light, or anywhehere in neutral, its always 2nd, then 1st and it always goes in smooth, never had aproblem every since. Anything else is perfect, I ve had the 4bbiden ss on race setting from day 1, all shifts are always smooth, never misshifted, only when i m talkin to someone and forget i m in 5th gear, and reshift to 5th without knowing hee

As far as reverse its not that tricky, everytime i try and it fails, its either i didnt hit the clutch all the way, or it just doesnt go, so just release the clutch and try again, it always works for me, my reverse did that a couple of times, but i hardly have to do that anymore, when it doesnt go, its just me no pressin the clutch fully, but i dont have that problem anymore ( my seat was too far back hehe, i m 6'2)

Good post SBradley. Very informative and by waiting a sec after disengaging, I found it goes into reverse much more smoothly much more often.
