You should be able to pull the shiny plastic straight down away from the knob. Then you can just twist the knob off.

looks like you have the boot seperated from the shiny piece all ready, just twist the handle now

twist it HARD. it will budge - it just takes a lot of effort.

make sure you are twisting counter clockwise or to the LEFT

if you have to, you may be able to use a monkey wrench to get more leverage, but I would suggest against that - you run the risk of messing up interior pieces....

Just crank on it. The worst that can happen is the shift knob breaks. It's made of mostly plastic. The shifter it self is all metal so the knob will break before anything happens.

Mine sometimes seems IMPOSSIBLY difficult to get off. I just get a wide flat-head screw driver and wedge it between the shift knob and plastic piece underneath it... Then I just twist the screw driver left and right a little, and then put the screw driver on the opposite side, and try the same thing. If you have two screw drivers, twist one side a little bit, and then pry the otherside off.

I have had to use this method on multiple occassions.
