Problem I need help diagnosing

I just bought a 94 RHD Prelude. The guy I got it from said the hazard switch needed replaced and gave me a new one when I picked up the car. The original switch is round and goes in the center console by the e-brake handle, but this new one is rectangle. He said it is a prelude hazard switch and would work as the original type isn't made anymore or something along those lines. He mentioned when that one was plugged in it would cause the hazards to come on when one of the blinkers was turned on.

Now, last night I decided to see if I could figure out what was up. I plugged in the hazard switch and hit the left blinker...it stayed on. Ok, so I tried the right blinker and smelled something burn. I immediately turned everything off and pulled the hazard switch. I turn the key back on and the digital clock and temp/fuel gauges don't come on. I start the car and the speedo and rpm gauge appears to be dead, the blinkers don't work and the reverse lights don't work. All other lighting seems to work fine.

I check fuses, but don't see any that are blown. I'm not sure which ones exactly to check because there is no fuse cover to tell me which fuses are for what. I know I checked most of them though....I assume something other than a fuse fried since I smelled the burning. From the research I've done it seems that there is a black control box (or something like that) behind the dash that seems like it could be the culprit. Does anyone know if that is what it is or if it may be something different?

That black control box I believe is just for the EL Cluster..

Your fuse box doesn't have a diagram telling you what's what?? Also, you should have one under the hood and one in the drivers side kick panel.

The Round Hazard Switch is from the '92 - '93 Preludes while the rectangle one is from the '94 - '96 Preludes. The Consoles were different.

Maybe even check the relays.. Maybe you fired one of those..?

I don't know of any compatibility issues with the switches for that to be the culprit... Considering people do the Console Conversion all the time...

The fuse box on the drivers side doesn't have the cover so I don't know which ones go to what. About all I can make out on the one under the hood is the ABS, everything else is in Japanese...lol I'll check the relays too. I can foresee this being something annoying to T/S.

Do you know of anything common between the following:

Turn signals
Reverse lights
clock, gas/temp gauge
Speedo/RPM Cluster

Those are the things that went out after this happened. The dash lights, climate control, radio...etc all still work.

Well, the Turns Signals and Hazards use the same relay..

Check that, and see if it helps for now.. It's late and I'm tired.. I'll try to the Manual Page with the Fuse Box Descriptions for ya tomorrow if you still need them.

Cool, I'm going to try and tear into it today. But yeah, if you don't mind. In the meantime I'll try and see what I can find too.

Ok, so I got it all figured out. It turned out to be a fuse for the hazard/turn signals. I could have swore I pulled and checked that fuse, but I guess I missed it. Now I just need to figure out why it is shorting out when i connect the hazard switch.

Well, today I finally got the correct switch. Plugged it in and bam...everything worked like a charm. So I guess maybe there is a difference or I had a bad switch...not really 100% sure. Either way, I'm happy now...at least that problem is fixed.
