problem - i hear chain sounds

hey guys. in my 92, when the car is running, i hear what almost sounds like a loose chain clanging around in the engine bay. sounds like it would if you had a chainsaw and the chain is loose....

well, im just curious to see if anyone has had this problem. im hoping its not a big thing, but just wanted to throw it out there.

thanks

It might be helpful if you could narrow it down a little. Does it happen when the car is idling, or turning, revving, certain rpm, where it is coming from?

you can hear it when its idling, then again when u rev it up, you can hear it. its hard for me to tell, since the exhaust is so loud, but i can hear it the most when i rev it.

If you can hear it at an idle, try holding a screwdriver with the handle up to your ear and putting the blade on different car parts. You might be able to hear where it is coming from. Could be just about anything, a bad valve, loose spark plug, bad alternator, doesn't sound very good though.

your timing chain is loose...oh wait, we dont have those.. sounds maybe like some bad valves. also check to see if one of your pullies are loose.

If its sort of like a rattling sound you might want to see if its the heat sheild just rattling. They have a tendency to rust then shake and make lots of noise when your engine is working hard.

Ya, It could also be as simple as adjusting the valves.
Have you ever done this?
I would try that and also check for loose parts

The bearings / magnet inside the pulley on my a/c compressor went bad a few months ago. The pulley would wobble when the car was on and would make a horrendous noise.

so do like ECH said and check all the pulleys out first.

My was making a rattling noise and then the crank broke. Not trying to scary you, but you should check it out quick to be on the safe side.

I've heard the same noise on my car, and that is what ive been told. I've been too lazy to check it out, but I think I will now to make sure that is the problem...hopefully not the valves

I think I've got the same noise. My friend used to have a 92 Prelude and he called it "Honda Rattle" and that it's pretty common. Mine only happens when it's idling and you can't hear it inside the car, only outside standing next to the driver's side. My friend thought it might have something to do with DOHC...

I just had my valves adjusted by the dealership btw.
