Problem with exhaust...

Hey guys I have noticed that around my engine head, it leaves this black dust-like crap around the seam or whatever. Also, around my exhaust tip it is all black. When I revved my engine to redline and looked at the exhaust tip, I could see a very small amount of black smoke coming out. Anyone know what my problem is here?

A small amount of black smoke is normal on a Prelude @ redline.
Its running rich, a rich mixture is safe.

So that's why my exhaust tip is black then, correct? One of my friends told that I would ruin my new GReddy exhaust when I put it on. He said that black stuff would build up in the exhaust and screw it up. Is that true?

If your car was sitting for a while, then it's normal for it to blow out grey smoke. I had the same problem. I think it's just condensation in the exhaust.

ok like the weather out right now is like 58
so when i roll up to a stop sign and then take off, it puffs out a little grey smoke. sometimes more, sometimes less. i dunno what to think, it really doesn't use any oil so maybe its buring antifreeze? any help is appreciated. I can get pics or video if anyone is interested.

heres some help

black dust around the head normally menas you ahve an exahsut leak it means carbon is leaking through the gasket and staining the head.
As of the exhasut black smoke is fine never hurts at all jsut means your running rich which is fine at higher rpms. For the grey smoke though I didnt really read oyur post well did your car sit for a while if so like someone else said its just the engine getti ng rid of condensation. As long as oyu dont see any blue in the smoke you should be fine but if problem persists please keep updated I will see what else I can figure out. Hope I helped

The black stuff is carbon and it happens because your car burns gas. Look at the inside part of any exhaust. It is black.

So I will probably need to replace my exhaust manifold gasket. Anyone know how much that will cost me?

So it's something I would be able to install myself? I thought maybe I would have to take it into some shop and have them do it...
