Prelude noob--- is this a good buy??

92 Prelude SI Automatic with 90k miles....

All I know so far is whats on the auto trader listing, the car is 4hrs a way so i'm going to have a buddy look at it tomorrow for me.

"Shows great! A/C is ice cold! Cash special. Smooth as silk! "

Asking price is $3400 + TTT

The car is "Tan" -- but I didn't think they made the prelude in that color for 92, which tells me it musta been repainted at one time or another.

Car fax shows "minor front collision with a parked car in 96, but no structural/frame damage"

Tell me what to look for. $4k is my max so if you guys think i can find a better car for my price range please let me know

I'm going to be getting rid of my bone stock 94 integra ls in order to get this. I know my integra's history and know its a clean car that is in need of nothing but a paint job. But Ive always wanted a prelude, and I figure if i'm goign to put money into something might as well be soemthing I really want.
I just dont want to be inheriting a butt load of troubles.

Thanks for looking guys:

---- the last pic is what worries me most, it looks like there could be some rust there.... any ideas?

either rust or whatever color was there before. I have seen some S models in that color before....very rare though. That is great miles, but unless you are looking for an auto, I would pass on it and get something else. That's just my opinion - don't base your purchase on it.

Good luck

I'd prefer an auto for now simply beacuse i kidna feel that an auto was probably less abused over its lifetime....

eventually i'd probably do some kinda swap or somthing so its not likely to stay an auto forever.

its gonan be a DD for a while until i'm ready to turn it into a project car.

i'm kinda looking for an automatic for right now. once again its probably not gonan stay an auto forever

my other car is an s2000 (so something a little more tame for a DD is ok for now till i can afford to make it into a project car)

I like

If you already have a fun car, get a civic or accord or something that would probably be cheaper on everything unless you want a prelude. I'm not telling you not to get a prelude - it's a great car.

Do what you want - don't let other people make the decision for you. That's what I always tell my friends.

um, not to hate, but that color kind of makes the lude look like a chicks car. I just don't see me being like " yeah, I got a lude, it's parked outside" then getting into a tan exterior/interior lude. IDK, maybe it's just me.

Keep into consideration that at 90K miles in 16 years the car was driving around ~5,600/year. Meaning that it either sat around A LOT or it was just a summer car. Or worse some years it was driven a lot and others not driven at all.

Like Jsmooney said though, it's all up to you, if you like it and can afford it, go for it.

I'd like to seriously modify the car some day. I've got a sweet spot for this generation prelude.

I hate the color to be honest, but i dont plan on it staying this way forever.

got a girlfriend i'm most likely gonna marry, not worried bout impressing anyone. besides if I was gonna do that i'd be rollin the s2000, not the lude.

as for getting something else altogether (non prelude) I've got a 94 Integra right now (for sale) that I'm giving up for this.

When I was growing up my father bought a 92 Lude as his first new car. It was to be my first car, but the thing got stolen in Newark NJ in 1996. Ever since i've always wanted one again.

so thats the plan drive the **** outta it till it dies on me, and turn it into a serious project car.

here are a few more pics I got the dealer to send to me (not picking it up until friday as its 4hrs away)

so for the price... decent car?

Seems pretty decent for the money. Have your guy take a look at the engine bay, check the oil etc. Just general stuff.

If you plan on doing stuff to it later, I would gear towards buying something closer to what you would want to mod later. I can understand the auto part, but maybe a better color. However, as far as 4th gens ago. It looks pretty clean. Where I live, a good majority of the 4th gens are pretty hacked up.

How long have you been looking for? I might try to keep looking for a week, see what else you find. But overall it doesnt appear to be a bad buy.

Nice S BTW

Interior is nice

Here's what I say - it's easier to fix the exterior than the interior. or in other words - get a car with a good interior

They are great fun (I assumed the teg was also...). If you don't mind the auto, drive it for a while and drop a JDM H22A, LSD, etc... I just converted my 5spd 92 SI into a Jdm beauty (on the inside... okay... on the inside of the engine bay, exhaust)... the body and interior can come with time. I have never driven the auto, but I understand they are somewhat mild.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

I paid 1100 for the car about 3 years back (SI with 198K). Swapped it at 226K (got it back less than a week ago!)... cost me about 6,000 for the following: (I still plan a brake upgrade and some bodywork, etc)

1992 Honda Prelude Si/JDM VTEC Swap*

*Provided by Blueridge Motorsports; 306 Sterling Street, Morganton, NC 28655

Modifications:

Engine:

JDM H22A*
M2B4 Limited Slip Differential*
Koyo 2 Row Aluminum Radiator* w/ stock fans
Stage 1 Competition Clutch*
Custom 3” Short Ram Intake* w/ Kool Blue Cone Filter*
NGK Spark Plugs*
Ceramic 4-2-1 Header*
Custom 2.5" Header Back Exhaust*
Magnaflow High-Flow Cat.
Nopi Titanium Muffler*
eCtuned P06/P28*

Suspension:

Neuspeed Sport Springs
KYB AGX Adjustable Shocks
SPC front and Rear Camber Kits
Polished Front and Rear Strut Tower Bars*
Stock 15” rim w/ 205-55-15 Yokohama Avid V4s

I paid a little more for the engine than I would have online... (you can get the h22a with LSD for about 2200-2500... I have some sites saved if you want them)... I paid 2800 for mine through Blueridge because I knew they would take great care of me and I knew the engine would be solid... insurance so to speak.

JDM Engine Links

maybe some people on here know something about some of these companies???

I've heard good things about HMO
http://www.hmotorsonline.com/shop/sc...Engines&hit=10

a little higher, but supposed to be good:
JDM Honda | JDM Honda Parts, JDM Honda Engines / JDM Nissan Motor Swaps, Used JDM Parts - Password JDM

I think jsa is good and jdm eng corp
JSA Motors - We specialize in low mileage Japanese JDM engines & transmissions imported from Japan. Honda engine swap guides for jdm honda engine swaps.
Engines, jdm, diesel engines, jdm engines, japanese engines, japanese motors

might be good??

I don't really know anything about the following... these were my bookmarks. My motorsports guys said that even though all these engines come through Canada that they recommend buying from a supplier in the US (apparently they have more problems with the ones ordered directly from Canada). Best way to check where they are located is obviously to go to "contact us" and check the address... The ones coming directly from Canada (they all go there at one point due to shipping cost etc... it's cheaper than bringing them directly into the US) might be fine... they seem to have some good reviews, but I decided for "insurance" purposes to order through Blueridge Motorsports in Morganton NC... they are great.

You could see if there is a phone # to call and talk about the car with the dealer. It seems legit i think you should get it it has a good amount of miles for that much. But im more of a 5th gen myself.

Good luck

You should buy mine instead... 92 Si clean as hell inside and out. Bone stock (paper air filter) but I have a stainless header and intake for it. 110000 miles 5 spd. Not really looking to sell it too bad yet but Id sell it if someone wants to give me $4000 for it. If not Ill just keep driving it lol. Where you at?

Best of luck with it.... remember to stack some mad miles on it and then in a couple years go with the h22 and lsd... you can trade the old engine and tranny for some new performance parts like I did (I traded my 226K H23 for a full set of kyb agx shocks )
