prelude on the fritz

Hey guys sorry for the long post but my lude is freaking out. Maybe its just old but I'm hoping you guys can put some reason to the madness. I bought my prelude about a year ago and haven't had any major problems. Now it seems like its trying to go out with a bang. Recently a few things have popped up at around the same time.

First of all the speedometer is kicking on and off while driving. Once it stays off for long enough the check engine light will go on and D4 begins flashing without pause. From what I have read i probably need a new speed sensor.

Second, the AC compressor has begun to cut on and off repeatedly in really hot weather. When it is engaged, the air is still ice cold, but it does not seem to wanna stay on for very long.

Finally the car has begun to overheat when at stoplights. It appears to heat up really fast, like from cold to running temp in a few minutes in the summer heat. It looks like my coolant temp sensor is bad because the fan only appears to turn on when the car is off.

Obviously I sort of already know what the problem is for everything but the ac compressor. But I'm curious if there is anything electrical that could be causing so many issues to pop up at the same time like a short or something. Any other info for the individual problems is still appreciated. Thanks for the help.

not sure but the only thing I know of that could cause so many electrical problems would be a bad ground

if it overheats at stoplgiths, your cooling fans are prolly failing to turn on, your ac compressor is prolly just about to need replacement and the speedo thing usually happens with the tach, im not sure of the casue tho. im sure somone on here will give you a answer for that

Are you sure that its your compressor that is failing to turn on? what you will probly want to try before you go buying a new compressor and paying for someone to recharge your A/C is pulling apart your climate control and resoldering the connector points on the board. Its a VERY common problem with 4th gens and it seems like that might be whats happening. If you need a write up on it I can find it for you but some quick searching and you should be able to find it yourself without any problem.

cool thanks for all the info guys. i found a small crack on the radiator leaking coolant so I gonna replace that and see how it looks. The AC issue may very well be what you are describing Alude. I noticed that the controls don't always switch when I select different vents so I thought it might have been the problem. Ill try tearing apart the controls this weekend and see what i can find.

Make sure you solder the connections for both clips. I forgot to get the points that control the backlighting for the temp control.
