Prelude DOHC vs SOHC

Having 2 cams versus 1 cam is a benifit because? Both are controlling 16 valves in the preludes case. I could see the DOHC being neccessary for vtec operation but in H23 it could have a SOHC and make the same power could it not theoretically speaking?

I'm also looking for a turbo manifold for my F22, anyone selling or know a manufactorer who does.

the reason that its better is because it reduces stress on the the one cam, you have on for intake valves and one for exhaust valves,, its not just one controlling both.. so its less stress i guess for higher revs..

Hi cam ~ Low cam
Intake ~ exhaust

wouldn't you want two cams to do that instead of one?

The big reason is that the valve can be placed farther apart and they can be larger. This allows air to be able to go in and out of the engine easier.

haveing dohc for a small engine may allow higher revs but it seems to be more benificial on larger engines such as v8s and what not. they allow the cylinders to be larger because the valves maybe spaced farther apart which would be quite less cool with only one cam.

that and the f22 doesn't have vtec nor does the h23, for whatever reason you want, h22 is the best that is if you keep it naturally aspirated -- going turbo that is a whole new argument, but still the h23 would be better than the f22. The f22 is just an old accord motor they had before they developed the better engines

If your going turbo, i'd go with the h23. If your going N/A then go with the h22. If your making a show car, then you'll probley get the f22. It's your call

As far as the comment about they are needin v-8's. how many v-8 do you see with DOHC, i don't see too many, most are either SOHC or DOHV (Dual overhead Valve). But then again, most v-8's are manufactured by americans and they are afraid for some reason to make a lot of them.

What does have to do with the question asked in the thread?

heard that DOHC is for small and powerful engines and SOHC are for huge as V-8s hell the s500 even is SOHC and you're talking about a 90 thousand dollar car here. DOHV i never heard of that...

Old v-8 have push rods and one cam for the engine. A lot of newer v-8's are either dohc or sohc.(2 or 4 cams for the engne) Ferrari's are dohc with 5 valves per cylinder. I think mustangs gt's have dohc engines and I think the engine in the Infinity Q45 is a dohc v8.

Supposing you've got similar engines, so a 2.2 with 16 valves the performance difference would be minimal.

The reason I think they use DOHC is when you use multiple valves. They started with 8 valves so a SOHC was sufficient. Then the 16V came and most brands went to DOHC. I think Honda is one of the few that made a SOHC 16V.

A few other benefits of DOHC are:

- you can get the ideal valve angle because the camshafts are right above the valves. (better breathing of the engine)
- you can use more valves (20 instead of 8/16 valves)
- lighter valve train
- less valve float on high revs. (so higher revs is possible)

This is all I can think of.. correct me if I'm wrong..

Henry
