power steering TOO stiff at certain speeds

93 Si VTEC w/ 190,000 miles

i bought the car used at around 180,000

the problem is that when i'm driving and taking a turn going around 50-65 mph (wide off ramp turn) the steering gets extremely stiff. it's very hard to turn the wheel, almost as if it does not want to move.

i don't know what the problem could be.

also, the steering wheel is relatively stiffer than what regular steering wheels would be.

i was just thinking.... is it because maybe the power steering fluid hasn't been changed in a long time and is completely deteriorated?

or could it be the vehicle speed sensor going crazy?

maybe your power steering pump is going bad... is it hard to steer at low speeds like when you're parking?

like i said it's relatively stiffer...

oh and sometimes during parking, the steering does make a whining noise.

so it could be the pump?

i have 2 pumps sitting around i can try to replace with

Sounds like a bad pump. At high speeds, I feel like my power steering is assisting TOO much sometimes.

It seems like getting rid of your power steering would be hard on the steering column, since you have to put a lot more force into the steering wheel at low speeds than Honda was intending. Aren't 4th gens heavy enough that it becomes an upper-body workout to park?

If your steering doesn't want to move at 55mph, I'd be concerned for more than just the pump. At that speed you should have no problem steering even without the assist, by my estimation. When was the last time you had the wheels off and stuff checked out? Alignment?
