Is it true you can remove the power steering belt and still drive the car? Will this cause me more problems in the long run? I'm having no end of problems getting a new pump as I live in the uk its bad for getting parts if I can drive without it I will

Yes. You can remove the whole pump if you want, and then leave a small amount of fluid in the steering rack for lubrication. Take the lines that used to run to the pump and "T" then together and put a small breather filter on the "T" where the lines connect. Steering will be tougher from a stop (parallel parking, etc.) but will be fine otherwise.
