power steer not work at idle

Today is the first day it's done it. I was actually coming to a stop to turn around, and I pulled into someones driveway, but I had to crank the wheel hard because I didn't have my power steering.

It's fine driving. And on the highway. I played with it a little bit, and as long as the cars driving, period, it works.

When I start to slow down, sometimes it goes out; if I throw my car into neutral to coast to a stop, it'll stop working as well.

I checked my fluid, it's at a healthy level.

Belts are fine. I replaced my belts when my harmonic ballancer went lol.

I think I should assume it's my pump then. But if it's the pump, why would it act up at idle/neutral, but not while driving? I mean the belts running both at idle, and I would assume while driving...any help is appreciated.

Look under the hood while somebody turns the wheel back and forth. I bet you either see a leak or a slipping P/S belt.

I asked my step dad about it. He's a farmer, so I didn't think he'd know anything about it, but he said there's like, plastic pieces or something in a pump that could go bad? So as the car revs up it spins the belt faster and makes it work.

So if its not working at idle it's probably 'cuz the pump is bad. But ya when he comes back from mowing hay I'll have him look with me. Thanks.

Are you sure its working at all? When the car is moving it doesn't take much effort to turn the wheel. It's only when you're moving really slow or stopped when it's really though. My guess is it's the pump.
