Possible Fog Switch Alternative

I have been wanting OEM/JDM fogs for a while now and finally had the money to purchase some...so I have been researching the different ways to hook them up...

Of course the switch is one of the most hard to find (and expensive pieces) especially for the 92 tweeter switch. So I started looking for alternatives. I couldn't find threads concerning good alternatives other than just wiring a simple radio shack or pep boys switch.

I didn't really like that idea because I wanted it to look somewhat stock. So I started looking around for OEM fog switches on ebay. I wanted to find a switch that I could insert somewhere in the dash or tweeter cover so it had to have a housing, one that would illuminate and when pressed indicate that it was depressed. It also would need to be easier to find and less expensive...

I found two interesting results:
1. the JDM Integra Type R Fog Switch:

This switch isn't terribly hard to find. there are quite a few on ebay. It is amber but those little bulbs inside can be changed...

2. a JDM Accord Fog Switch

not quite as appealing but still not a bad choice.

Now that I found some options, I looked at price. Most of the ITR switches were going for more than $50 but I liked the button syle better than the accord one. The accord one was going for around $40.

So after some more checking I googled the ITR switch and I found that HmotorsOnline.com listed that they had the ITR switch for $20 on their Misc. List. I called them up. Talked to an associate and ordered one up for $30 shipped.

Now all I have to do is wait for it (and the fogs) to come in and then I hope to update and let everyone know how it went. I hope that this may be another option for those that want some kind of OEM switch (instead of the paper-clip trick)...

The Accord switch looks like it will fit in the slots in the console, but I can't be for certain. I used a JDM fog switch for awhile, and then found a 94-96 switch that I'm using now, even though my fogs are always on.

There are a ton of options if you are decent at wiring.

Look into some Acura legends and Acura Visor's fogs switch.

If you can, find the Accord Type-R wagon's fog light switch. All I know is that the car that came with the H23 DOHC Vtec, had some sweet parts, and I vaguely remember reading that the fog switch was different in that.

in the 92 center console there are not any blank spots...that's why the fog switch was put into the tweeter cover.

Do you mean the whole tweeter cover with the switch, or just the switch? I already ordered the ITR switch for $30 shipped though...

In Japan, they used this piece in place of that tray right before the rear armrest: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...6647703&rd=1,1

are you saying that that is a picture of a 92 center console? I thought all of the 92's had the center console that went all the way back...mine does not look like that. There are no accessory blank spots anywhere on my dash or my center console.

That's a 93 console. The 92 console goes all the way back, and the 94-96 console has the cupholder and armrest.

another alternative: skip the switch, use the paper clip trick.

Doesn't the 5th gen Prelude have a dash mountable fogswitch? You could use that in place of your dimmer switch and then buy my JDM console dimmer switch! ;D

I got my switch in today and started measuring to see if it would fit where I wanted it to. It was going to be close, but I liked the location.

The switch:

with the connector and wire:

I made a rough template and started cutting and then dremeling, etc...

I did have to cut some plastic on the inside of the dash too because the switch is so deep. It is still intact, just some "weight savings":

Now a couple of pics installed:

what a mess!

now I just have to wire it up!

That actually looks really good. I'm surprised. I didn't think it was going to look right installed. If it lights up amber, you gotta change the color of that bulb.

Thanks for the comment...here is how I wired it up...

Prelude Fog Connector has 6 Wires in a 10 pin connector:

1. -
2. -
3.-
4. red with black stripe: illuminate
5. red
6. black: ground
7. red with green stripe: Fog -
8. orange
9. red with yellow stripe Fog +
10. -

The Integra Switch Connector has 5 wires in a 5 pin connector:

1. red with black stripe: illuminate
2. black: ground
3. black: ground
4. red with green stripe: Fog -
5. red with black stripe: Fog +

I used a connector that was actually connected to a blank accessory board. I cut the connector part from the board and used it so I wasn't just twisting wire together. I used some female crimp-on pieces to attach the wires to the connector and then used plenty of electrical tape to both insulate each wire and to keep the make shift harness together.

Then I connected it up to test to make sure everything worked.

Finally I pulled the clip through the dash and connected the switch.
The lights light up fine. It was hard to get a good picture because it was dark but here is one of the illumination:

It is normal for the relay to make noise when the switch is flipped right?

when I installed my relay it made a buzzing noise....but it would only go away once i turned on the fogs, it would actually buzz if the fogs werent on. so i went out and bought another relay and now i only hear a slight buzz when first turning on my low beams (less than a 1/2 second buzz).

Is yours constantly buzzing? if its just a slight buzz, then it's normal.

yeah, there is a short buzz when I push the switch in (like half a second). it doesn't make any noise when it is "on" or off, just when I first push the button to turn the fogs on.

My relay buzzed in my 94. I did the hazard button conversion. I switched a couple of wires and that fixed the buzz. I'm not sure which wires though, it was a long time ago. There are a lot of write-ups concerning the buzz.
