possible big tranny problem?

i think i have a big problem in my 96 vtec, my car is only going 60 at almost 4500 rpms in 5th gear! what's wrong with this picture??!?!

That's sounds normal. Preludes have short gearing.

Yeah i have a h23a with the M2S4 tranny, and in 5th gear im around 4000@ ~ 80 mph. I believe the vtec came with the M2F4 transmission right? Which has shorter gears. So your situation doesnt sound too far off.

No because all the 5th gears in the preludes have the same fifth and final drive ratio's, what's wheel and tire size? Possible for previous owner to install aftermarket FD to shorten gears. Also, whats the transmission code?

It should be 3000 rpm at 60 (assuming the ratios are the same or close to the 5th gens)
