Please Help!!

I drive a 94 Prelude SI 155,000 miles. The temp gauge is fluxuating from normal to hot then back down to normal. It's not overheating. (no smoke) They've checked fluids, changed thermostat, cleaned radiator. I've noticed a fan doesn't come on after I turn the car off like it use to. they tell me at the garage it's kinda trial and error now they want to change the sensor or something
and of course they charge me an arm a leg to do this.

tail pipe

see your tailpipe if it's blowing white smoke. Some of the problem that causes your temp gauge to do that is a bad head gasket or a head gasket starting to go bad. Just my thoughts.

I've had intermittent electrical probs in the past, have your ECU reset if your positive that nothing mechanical is causing this. Are your fans coming on in traffic after idling for a long time, is this when the temp goes up & then goes down when moving again?? If so, check fuses for your thermo fans.could be that easy.
