Patch tank?

On my way back to NYC from Houston, I ran over some metal crap on the highway and it ripped apart my center console, shifter, front seat and fuel tank at 2am in Maryland. My driver seat is all bent upward. damn I hate when **** happens.... Anyways, is it possible to patch a fuel tank in anyway. The mechanic tells me I MUST buy a new tank cuz there is no way to patch one, He never even looked at the tank and just said I needed a new one if there ever is a hole in a fuel tank. Is this true?

well ghetto way, you could drain the tank, get a piece of metal and weld it flat over the rip. Welded ALL the way around, but it would be better if you just bought a new one for safety reasons.

NEVER weld on a gas tank. Even if its empty, the fumes are still there. Gas vapor + an electric arc + enclosed tank = a 1 way trip to the morgue.

You have to buy a new tank.
Try a junkyard, would be cheaper then the dealer and just a god for what you need.

technically there is this hardening compound you can mix and apply but I wouldn't trust it. It's only for very small hairline type fractures or small holes.
