Passed SMOG

Very happy to have passed my California State SMOG Test today at the local "Test Only" station. This is the first time I have had to SMOG test since I swapped in the H22A.

Just FYI for those in California with a JDM H22A engine swap. In Prelude's only does the H22A qualify as a replacement engine since the H22A1 variant was offered in the U.S. market. As long as you have all the emissions equipment in place, and a good catalytic converter, you should pass just fine. My cat is original from 1992 so my Hydrocarbon (HC) measurements for the 15mph portion of the test are right at the max. During the 25mph portion, HC dropped down a bit. Probably would have been lower all around if I didn't have to sit and wait in line 10 minutes for my test.

Here are my numbers:

15mph:
HC: 89 (Max) 89 (Measured)
CO: .52 (Max) .19 (Measured)
NO: 791 (Max) 404 (measured)

25mph:
HC: 63 (Max) 57 (Measured)
CO: .43 (Max) .36 (Measured)
NO: 511 (Max) 190 (Measured)

I had to warm up my cat everytime I did a smog check or it wouldn't pass.

I wonder how that would work for my 96 SI OBD2 H-23 When I swap to the H-22, since there all OBD1?

I've noticed HC's are always high on the jdm h22s. Are you running a jdm p13 or a usdm?

If you live in CA it won't work you'll fail.

I am using a USDM P13 ECU. Possibly it is running a bit to lean due to the higher CR in the H22A in comparison to the USDM H22A1.

I just smogged my H22A again. My numbers very close to 2 years ago when I smogged. Last time I smogged with a jdm p13. This time I tried a usdm p13. I did a tune up before I went, new dist cap, rotor, new plugs and wires and oil change. I did a pretest just incase I failed, I didn't want it recorded. After seeing the pretest I was amazed how the HC's were still so high. Other numbers were fairly close so I'm guessing the ECU played a tiny factor in dropping the numbers or it was just the tune up that helped.

Not wanting to risk failing I poured some denatured alcohol into the tank. Then smogged it again. I think the smog tech was confused, probably more amazed how I got the numbers to go down so much.

Numbers from 2 years ago:
15mph:
HC: 88 (Max) 88 (Measured)
CO: .52 (Max) .12 (Measured)
NO: 704 (Max) 348 (measured)

25mph:
HC: 53 (Max) 51 (Measured)
CO: .50 (Max) .04 (Measured)
NO: 738 (Max) 102 (Measured)

Pretest
15mph:
HC: 88 (Max) 87 (Measured)
CO: .52 (Max) .08 (Measured)
NO: 704 (Max) 262 (measured)

25mph:
HC: 53 (Max) 45 (Measured)
CO: .50 (Max) .01 (Measured)
NO: 738 (Max) 114 (Measured)

With Denatured Alcohol
15mph:
HC: 88 (Max) 34 (Measured)
CO: .52 (Max) .02 (Measured)
NO: 704 (Max) 47 (measured)

25mph:
HC: 53 (Max) 29 (Measured)

CO: .50 (Max) .02 (Measured)
NO: 738 (Max) 37 (Measured)
