Painting the valve cover

What paint should i use? i was going for 1500 degree red engine paint.

should i find high-temp clearcoat as well? also, whats the easiest, best way to remove the original paint from the valve cover?

1500 degree paint will be sufficient.

I used Plasi-kote (plasti-cote?) high-temp engine paint. I also used a regular paint stripper to get the old paint off, which took me forever. It's a pain in the butt trying to get it all off. If I were to do it all over again--I'd just paint over the original paint, I'd just make sure it was really clean first (brake-kleen or shop solve should do that nicely).

thats wierd, i can pull the OEM paint right off my valve cover w/ my fingernail.. its peeling back.. its REALLY starting too now, wiht a pressure washer i could get most of it off... i plan on getting it all off and painting it as well.

If i sanded it down lightly (till its just the bare alluminum showing) would i need to primer it prior to painting?

Thanks,
Crate =]

Mine wasn't peeling, so I didn't have the fingernail option

I wouldn't imagine that you'd need to prime it, but if you were to, you'd need to find some high temp primer too (obviously)..

Use "Air Craft Remover" Just when you thought brake fluid would take paint off...this is the ****...you can get it @ auto zone or a parts store. Then I used 1200 degree paint, and 1200 degree clear coat. BTW this aint a prelude

The best option would be to powder coat it, but if you are going the paint route so be it. Try to mask the lettering off before you paint it. Vaseline works well too. Then after the paint is dry, WET SAND the letters with 1000, then 1500 grit (WET), then 2000 grit (WET). clean it up, and polish the letters with a good polishing compound
(wenol) It will shine like a mirror.

its done...

took me like 3 hours (hehe, i was being very careful) from beginnning to end. I gave it atleast 6 thin coats of the red paint. it looked pretty crappy and dull, but then i put on 3 coats of clear coat and it got all nice and shiny. i let it airdry for 45 minutes, then i mounted it and drove around for about an hour. popped the hood... still nice and shiny... hopefully it wont peel.

oh, i painted over the emblem and everyhing... i was scared of ruining the paint around it.

thanx for the tips! aircraft remover rocks, lol
