Painting stock rims???

How do you paint the stock rims off a lude?
It can look really nice and I was aondering if there is a special
paint or prep work eg: sanding or stripping clear coat????
Anyways if anyone has comments ideas it would help...I think
its a good idea to do until $$$ is available for aftermarket ones.

Look into getting them powdercoated. Powdercoating is way more durable than paint, and usually ends up looking better in the end. Paint chips.

Yeah, Neokai's wheels are badass. I think he was selling them also. It was either him or somebody else who had done the same thing, I can't remember.

The powdercoat is actually a plastic copolymer that adheres to the metal through static electricity and it is then baked on to the part. It is sprayed on with a type of paint gun, it comes out in a powder form, and bakes into an extremly durable finish. Where as paint is more prone to cracks and chips.

And to answer the question, yes the original finish must be stripped off first. You can have them bead blasted or you can do it yourself with easy off oven cleaner.

Thanks doc!
does the easy off take all of the clear coat off or is there residue that must be scuffed or sanded off???

And does the powdercoating have a smooth finish when it is baked or does it keep a powder finish??
thanks

The easy off will remove all the clear coat. You need to spary it on the wheel and let it set for awhile. It should start to turn black as it dissolves the coating. then just spray off with lots of water. If it doesn't remove it all the first time then a second coat will do the job. This is whayt I used to strip the clear coat off my bikes frame so i could polish it. It works very well. I would use the heavy duty stuff, and have lots of ventilation.

When the powdercoating is baked on, it will leave a very smooth paint like finish if they do it right. I can also run as well and leave drips. Make sure you do some research and get the best people possible to do it.

Click here for a very good powdercoating company

I'd HIGHLY recommend the powdercoat. You'll pay more, but the result is worth it. You can get flat or gloss coats, and it is MUCH more durable than any paint would be on your rims. It stands up to brake dust quite well, as well. I had my 17" ADR AV8's powdercoated gloss black, and it's one of the best things I've done to the exterior of my car. It gets a lot of positive comments ... it stands out more. It looks JDM w/o the ridiculous JDM price tag.
