no deck, on the block, open where the cylinder wall is just there and you can see the area that the coolant travels and then the closed decks are just solid but still are able to flow coolant through them...........

when turboed the open decks more subceptiable to cracking because they have the ability to flex that much more, but they were designed for longer lasting block......

so whats the years guys.

Why not do a search? That's what the function is for!!

But to answer your question:

non-vtec H23's = Closed Deck
H22A1 = Closed Deck
H22A4 = Open Deck

Guess what, I found this in under a minute using the SEARCH function

I guess I should add this too because I'm doubting you will search for it and you wanted to know the years:

H22a1=93-96 USDM VTEC

H22a4=5th Gen VTEC
