I live in Australia and have a 92 si. It performs great and i haven't had a single prob with it. There is a sticker on the car that says premium unleaded only and it says to refer to the manual except i didnt get one with my car. I was just wondering if i could put standard unleaded in to save money, and what effects it would have.
I would also appriciate it if some could scan the relavent part of the manul for me to look at.
Premium fuel won't do that much to you... Honestly it doesn't really matter. Half of the gas stations don't have anything higher than a 90 octane anyways. Yeah the pump might say 93, 94, ect... But there was a study on it and 87 is usually 83-85, 89 is usually at best 87, and the premium is usually 89-91... The stations that tested best were Shell, and Marathon. Sunoco and BP sucked!!! Mobil was pretty good too. Anyhow putting 87 won't hurt anything, you won't be slower to the point where you can notice. It's like the Coke & Pepsi challenge, you can't really tell unless someone tells you what it is.

GLoc I agree with you, I too try to keep premium in the car, but the question was, Is it okay to use non premium gas? Yes is okay, it won't do damage, I mean the car is run on an Internal combustion engine you gan put a lot of things in it and it will run. Premium is what is best, but 87 will work just fine. You might not get all the ponies possible out of the car (like lose 1-2hp) but not enough to worry.

my old car, all it got was premium for 10 years or so till gas prices soared, then we only fed it regular. it ran fine being the POS it already was. ah, i miss it
Hey Rampar, where are you mate? I’m in Melbourne by the way. For me I only use Shell Optimax (98 Octane, blue colour) since I bought my 1994 Prelude VTIR in May 2000, and never have a problem with the engine . (BTW, my car already has about 140,000 Km on it). But recently, I started switching to Mobil Synergy 8000 (purple colour) which is also a 98 Octane fuel, but it also have the added advantage of a fully synthetic additive package that provides detergency, lubricant and corrosion protection in it.
Then about a week ago, I tried the latest BP Ultimate 98 Octane (Gold colour, which also have all the additive as the Synergy 8000) and find it really give me more Km/Litres compare to Optimax and Synergy 8000. But I feel that the Synergy 8000 actually do give me a bit more power (I stress it is only my personal opinion OK!!!!). Don't want to get this ---->
So, for me I will not try to save the few cent and end up paying more in maintenance cost in the long run.
See you around mate.
PS. The blue, purple and gold colour I was talking about on top is actually the colour of the pump, not sure about the fuel’s colour itself.
Hey G_Log, I miss my old POS as well, his name is “AHA a sky blue Dutsun 200B 1978. Sadly I have to put it to rest, because people can walk up a steep hill faster then him.
I too live in MElbourne and my car has done 195,000 ks. Looks like i'll give regular unleaded the go some day. I would still aprriciate it if someone could scan in that part of the manual.
Hey rampre, don’t go cheap on the fuel mate; it is only about 4 - 6 cent per litter different for most of the time. But if you insist of putting regular unleaded fuel, then I would suggest Mobil Synergy 2000 (about 91/92 octane level). But I still don’t understand why do you want to use regular unleaded fuel . Do your car and yourself a favour Rampar, since the premium unleaded fuel is cheap, good fuel economy, clean to run, MORE POWERFUL, and it is also good for the environment .
Anyway, the choice is your’s mate.
PS. I usually fill up at the Mobil Station at the corner of Elgar Rd. and Whitehorse Rd. Box Hill.
