Ok Oil Question

Ive been searching and searching for info into what type of oil to put into my h23 with 86K on it. Coming up with nothing

I switched over to Mobil 1 10w30 and it now clicks?? Valves tapping??

Someone suggested i get 5w30? The car also seems to eat up the synthetic pretty fast? Whats going on?

Should i go back to regular oil? If so 5w30? 10w30? ...i saw that high mileage stuff...says its good to use once a motor has at least 75k on it..

Thanks Guys,
Steve

Where you running synthetic prior to Mobil 1? If not then thats probably why your eating oil.
On high mileage engines its not recommended to switch to synthetics as they can cause oil leaks and such as they are slicker than conventional oil and the more worn the engine the more you can have problems with switching to synthetic.

I used Valvoline GTX High Mileage 10w-30 on my last oil change and seems to work well. Have only used conventional oil and figure since I've got around 160k miles I'd give it a try.

Would recommend changing back to conventional and going with either the Valvoline or Castrol high mileage conventional oil.

For the high mileage oils, is it better to run 5w-30 or 10w-30?

well, since he is in a colder climate I would say run the 10w-30 for the added lubrication during cold days.

If you already switched to synthetic, and you switch back, it wont "fix it". The slicker consistance of the synthetic actually removes carbon deposits that build up and create a seal.

So basically, if it leaks now, it will leak later, and will leak until another 80K miles worth of carbon builds up (assuming a ring doesnt fail before than). Damage is already done.

Synthetic always burns easier because of its consistancy. Being "thinner" means its burns "easier". But i burn so much convential, i shouldnt talk.

So should I just stick with the 5w-30. It does get cold over here but it's not as bad as PA.
