Right now, my 96 prelude has about 113k miles on it. People recommend using synthetic oil. I use Red Line synthetic right now and change it about every 3000-4000 miles. However, some people also told me that using synthetic on higher mile engines arnt good. Anyone have any input on this?
Also, I was planning on using castrol because synthetic was bad. By castrol. i mean the non-sythetic kind. Thanks
synthetic oil has a smaller molecular structure than standard oil, so it has the ability to creep into spaces, (and past rings), so there's a chance you might burn. I guess I'm not sure what your question it, you're asking about synthetic, but you're already using it? You tell us, you say you're using Red Line, how's your oil consumption? As for the seal thing, I dunno, I can't see how it would, but hey, I'm no expert, I just went from standard to synthetic back to standard, and everything seems okie-dokie to me.
You might want to be careful about switching. I've heard of engines sludging up do to switching between synthetic and standard oil. I don't have a scientific explanation to back it up though.
Right now i do use RED LINE, but i heard it was bad so i was going to go to castrol regular. I just thought some other had these problems and recommend me using castrol also. If not, ill use red line because i get them for good price =). Also for the red line, it feels alot better than mobil 1 for me.
Forget about all the stupid myth you've heard about using synthetic/regular oils in any combination or engine mileage. There should not be any problems.
Why are you changing synthetic oil so early? Mobil 1 can go 15k miles savely if you use a good quality oil filter.
oh so i shouldnt change every 3000 miles? before i was using fram but i ended up getting some hondas which is also fram, but i got 2 left. So when should i change my oil? 5k?

it's not really a myth, I've talked with techs who've seen older, high-mileage cars some in with oil actually seeping out of crevices in the engine, all because they switched to synthetic, the same goes for oil burn. I had a 2nd gen with 130k miles, and it burned a little bit of regular oil, but when I tried synthetic for 1 change I burned a $hit load, so it's far from myth.
If you are using synthetic oil you can chage it at 7k miles or even longer interval if you endup adding more oil to the engine during that time. Many tests were done on different cars and it was confirmed this oil can withstand longer drain intervals.
I suggest any mechanic who doesn't agree with mobil 1 engineers/chemists better find a new job.
well now you and I are talking about two different things. You mentioned a myth regarding engine mileage and the use of synthetic oil, and I pointed out it's no myth. I never disagreed with you that synthetic can last much longer between changes, I know that to be true, but I know for a fact my old prelude burned a much more noticeable amount of synthetic than it did regular, as has my new prelude. And if you notice that what that mobil 1 page you so eagerly provided us with a link to says, it doesn't specifically address the comparison of oil consumption between standard oil and synthetic, even in the last FAQ question. It spends a paragraph or so discussing how it's nonsense that high-mileage oils can rejuvinate seals, but at the end it only says if an "older engine is in good condition and does not have oil leaks, Mobil 1 with SuperSynâ„¢ provides the same advantages as when used in a new engine." If you have an engine in good condition that goes through just the slightest bit of regular oil between changes, however, it'll drink synthetic, and I have seen this first-hand.
just got my swap done, and i bought a hole friggen case of synthetic idk what was used in it before hand... but should i be ok? h22 has about 140k, but runs strong
That's where common sense comes in, there isn't answer for everything. If anyone has problems with synthetic then stop using it, plain and simple.
Personally I wouldn't use synthetic in the engine with 140k.
Just ask yourself these questions;
Are you planning on keeping the car untill the engine goes?
Is it really worth your while to spend extra money on oil?
I used synthetic oil in my previous cars, and for what? I ended up selling them, sure the new owner might be happier at my expense.
If the engine runs good and doesn't have any problems like excessive oil burning (blue smoke through the tail pipe) than you might be able to extend its life by using synthetic. In any case you can't go wrong with using synthetic, just sometimes the costs out weigh the benefits.
what about if you burn a lot of oil. i am down bout a quart every 3 weeks. should i shift to synthetic? i am running some high mileage castrol. but what if i do some sytec blend like castrol syntec blend 1030? i am tryin to make my car last- but it has 145k on it. but she runs strong, just likes to let off a little wasted oil out her tail end.
what to do???!?!?!?!?!
