Oil Pan Gasket

Hey everybody, I have to replace my oil pan gasket this week.

I picked up the part an now I'm checking out the helms to see what I need to do. Couple questions though.

1) Helms references "liquid gasket"...what is this stuff? can I get it at an auto parts place?

2) Can I get away with leaving my exhaust on? I reallly don't wanna take that off!

Thanks guys, and please pass on any other tips.

Don't know what the "Liquid Gasket" is, but yes you do have to take off your header and or maybe exhaust piping to get to your oil pan. The exhaust runs under your oil pan.

Damn I was hoping there was enough space to get it out without having to do that

if you have a two piece header just take off the lower side and disconnect it going into the cat, but yeah you need to loosen it so that you can slide the pan out, it doesn't take too long, i just did it a few weeks ago

Well it's the stock header, so that's two piece right? Hmm time to spray the bolts with some wd-40

Thanks....

So my first question was about sealing the gasket...do I need any silicone/goo stuff? Or is it supposed to seal just by tightening the oilpan back on?

It will seal buy tightening the pan back up. the liquid gasket they are refering to is called Honda Bond. it can be bought at the dealer for about 13bucks a tube, or you can save yourself some money and just get some high temp grey liguid gasket from the auto parts store. You will need to apply the liquid gasket in a few spots on the rubber gasket. the Helms will point the areas out for you. And also I would suggest ordering some new gaskets for your exhaust manifold. there are 2 small circular ones where the primaries mate up with the secondaries and there is one where it mates to the Cat. You might also need to buy some new studs for the primary/secondary flange. They sometimes go bad, and won't tighten enough to seal the flange.

you dont have to remove the secondary pipe. I couldnt get the bolts on the cat loose so i just took off the bolts that hold it to the header and let it dangle there. Had enough room to loosen the oil pan bolts and to remove it and everything. I have to take off the bolts to the hanger though and I think one of the rubber hangers too, im not sure.

Thanks Dr. James. I know the gaskets you're referring to, are you suggesting just for "while your at it" sort of thing? I have a full stainless exhaust (both sides of the cat) going in in probably a month so I will probably do them then.....actually there won't be anymore gaskets on the cat hehe.....so just the primary ones

Anyways I will pick up that grey bond stuff, and use it after on my Type-S valve cover, I thought it was the same stuff....

I will also look out for the studs. THANKS!

I recently had to replace the oil pan gasket in my ride.

If you bough a Honda brand gasket, you should not need any sealer. When you see how firmly the origional one is on there, you will see why sealer is not necessary- its a pain in the ass to get off.

I had to take off the header collector pipe as well as a support bracket (with toe hook) that runs under the pan.

Hose it out with brake parts cleaner and make sure its clean enough to eat off of before reinstalling it.

good luck-

brad

I bought a Honda Gasket...I may still use some HondaBond...

Are you saying I should clean out my collector pipe with brake parts cleaner? Or my Oil Pan or what. I suppose the pipe would have lots of dirty ish in there...

hehe....the oil pan. Clean it out REALLY good- there's usually a little sludge stuck to the bottom of it.

Or, you can spend $500 on a really cool Moroso oil pan.

My JDM gasket was stuck and dried out, it broke into about seventy billion (thereabouts) pieces and I had to use a scraper. The gasket spray won't work 'cause it's a thick rubber gasket. You could get lucky and have it come off fine however!

ps- I would totally recommend Hondabond, it seals the ends where the gasket goes around the rounded crank area.

I have a feeling mine is dried out too...

Yeah I have this Permatex High Temp Silicone Sealant I got from Crappy Tire...same as HondaBond..I have the places to seal it from the Helms. After that I'll use it again on my valve cover on the camshaft rounded areas

Thanks Guys
