Oil overfill - idle surge - now will not start

My 93 SI got an oil change and after about 30 miles started to run funny. When the clutch was depressed the idle soared up, then down, then up again...etc. After driving it, and shutting off the engine, the coolant fan would run longer than it used to. Finally, I started it one day and the engine just stopped running while it was sitting there idling. I have not been able to start it since then.

I replaced the spark plugs, cap and rotor, fuel filter, pcv valve. I checked the ignition coil and had the icm tested. Ignition wires are all ok. I also removed and tested the main relay and it is good. I hear the fuel pump running when I turn the key on.

The CEL never came on and no codes are stored.

After all this, I noticed that the oil level was too high and drained out about 2 quarts of oil, so that it is now between the dots on the dipstick.

What would you recommend doing next? What do you think is wrong?

So now that you drained 2 quarts of oil, and assuming you filled the engine oil to proper level, did you start up the car?

that would be my next step: starting the car.

As for the idle problem, i'd check/clean your FITV and your IACV's

As for the starting issue, listen to see if you can hear your fuel pump starting when you put the key in, if not, id check the Fuel Pump Relay.

Thanks. I've already tried that stuff.

Subsequently, I found the coolant was low. I added 1 gallon of 50-50 to get it full again.

I did a compression test, on the cold engine.

1: 187 psi
2: 194 psi
3: 175 psi
4: 185 psi

There is an oil leak, I think from the oil cooler that leaks only when you crank the engine.

1. Do you think the oil cooler is where I'm leaking the coolant into the oil?
2. Do you think the compression test proves that the head gasket is ok?
3. If the source of the coolant / oil leak is fixed, what is your best guess of other problems? Will I need to do more to get it started?

I've made my mechanic rich over the last few years, and have vowed to take care of this myself or just ditch the car.

Thanks for anyone who can help!

Something is amiss in cylinder #3.

Also, the oil cooler o-ring is known to fail and leak oil. It's easy to check and replace so you might as well do so.
