Oil for '94 Prelude

I'm 17 and this is my first car. The girl I bought it off of doesn't know what oil was used because she just took it to an auto-shop for tune-ups or whatever. Odometer went out at 137k, it's estimated to be about 190-200k right now.

What should I be getting?

I was told somewhere else to use 5w30 as well. How do I identify the model? I figure I should know if it's H22 or whatever it might be.

I have the VIN on my insurance papers in the car, not sure if that would do it.

And should it be synthetic or not?

On most Honda's the oil cap will tell you. It should be printed right on top of it.

note "5W-30" on the cap...

Look on the block for the engine code if you wanna know what you got. As for oil I use 5w-30. The manual says 10w-30 but a lot of PO members use 5w-30.

never seen a manual mention 10w-30 for an H22 engine. Follow what the oil cap says/

It's a Prelude S so it's F22A1 I believe. Same oil?

have you checked the cap yet like everyone keeps asking? I'm not sure for f22, might be different.

Straight from the Helm's:

"F22A1, H23A1 engine 5 W-30 preferred.
H22A1 engine: 10 W-30 preferred."

Thx everyone.

Also, I would have posted if the cap said what to use. It doesn't.

Yeah, the cap doesn't say. Like I said the manual is everything you need to know about your car. (:

Wish I had it.

I also never mentioned that it was automatic. Not sure if that matters.

Shouldn't matter. There's a PDF version of 92'-96' service manual floating around here some where that you could dl. It comes in handy.

Found those a few days ago but couldn't find anything about the oil type, only the amount.

Lol, if all else fails call your local dealer. But the majority of the engines for the Prelude (Honda in general) take 5w-30.
