Odd H23A1 problem

I'm checking to see if anyone else has heard of this before. A friend of mine with a 92 4WS Prelude called me up and told me that none of his pulleys were spinning, but the engine would run. He even said the crankshaft pulley wasn't spinning. I figured he thought the crankshaft pulley wasnt spinning. Well it actually is not spinning, but the motor still runs when the battery is charged at least. I looked and the bolt is still there. I played the belts a lil and the pulley moves some, but I was able to get it to catch enough to spin around 1-2 times, but it doesnt fully engage. I'm pulling it off tomorrow and checking it out. The only thing I can think of is either the key came out or the bolt loosened up some. Any other ideas? I've never seen something like this before with the crank pulley still attached.

probably the key rounded off the inside of the crankshaft pulley...

take out the crankshaft pulley and check it out..

only problem might be that if the key is rounded off, you won't be able to use a pulley holder tool to remove the pulley since it will rotate freely...

you might need to use an impact gun to get it off...

so the crank pulley bolt loosened up enough to break the key and allow the pulley to slowly round off the splines on both the crankshaft and the ones on the inside of the pulley. needless to say it sucks bad. i guess its time for a new crank or a new motor. but this is a first for me to see such a thing.

The Preludes do weird stuff with the main pulley bolt. Mine just came out while I was cruising down the freeway. Pulley got lodged up with the belts and wrapped around everything. Destroyed the key, but my crank was fine, thank goodness.
