Octane?

Hi everyone,

I would just like to know what Octane of gas you recommend I put in my car.

Also, is there any difference in power if I were to put in a lower Octane?

Thanks.

I always go with 93 ocatne from Chevron, because that what my brother Recomends and he is a Tech at Rusty Wallis Honda in Dallas.

I don't think, however, that lower octane would hurt your engine though

You're in Canada....whatever you do don't use Sunoco Ultra 94..that ethanol crap will kill your performance.

How come?

BTW I use 91 which is highest available here. If you don't run a high enough grade gas you car will retard the timing to keep the car from knocking so you can get away with lower grades.

It's cause of the Ethanol....I've proven it with 5-10 preludes already, everyone using Ultra 94 (up to 10% ethanol) with good plugs etc...was experiencing hesitation under high throttle...

Couldn't figure it out till I switched to Esso 92....and it was gone. Since then I have been telling people here in Canada and it seems to work for everybody I run into. Ethanol is not good for prelude engines...it my pump the octane up but it just BLOWS in performance. Which is so ironic cause the advertise it as a high-performance gasoline, however it is really great on the environment....too bad

What do they change on the engine that would make it run on a higher or lower octane?
'Cause the lowest we've got over here is 95.. and I run on 98.

They say that if you chip the engine the remove the ability of the car running on a lower octane..
So they tell me..

I use 93 at Chevron here in AL, these ludes are advanced enough to use 87 octane, the computer reconfigures the engine to handle it, but it's not reccommended, if you use it, expect anywhere from a 10-15HP drop

It's not that I want it to run on a lower octane, but it seems the engine management is standard adjusted for running on a lower octane.
Since the lowest we've got is 95, if you chip it, they remove whatever it is that they have adjusted at Honda. Hereby you get some more power.
But I want to what they would remove.. is it timing or what is it?

94 Sunoco vs 93 Mobil

Around here we have 91-94.I have been doing a test of the above gas for about 3 months.First was the mobil, car is crisp clean and mean.Sunoco It just SUCKED.Hesitation, poor preformance, I thought it was mabey my plugs but, I put 15 in of the Mobil yesterday after letting the light come on for my tank and about 10 mins later WOW what a difference. I would think that the higher octain raiting would be better ?
