A Note on Clearing Tails

I finally cleared my tails the other day. Things went pretty smoothly, until the end, when I put a tiny crack in the driver's side lens. Needless to say, I'm much more confident in my abilities to do this...and I will try it again on a new set of tails sometime soon. A few things I thought I might add, because they made my job a LOT easier:

1. Use a blow dryer on high.
2. Once you get the bottom and inside of the tails open (following the hp.com article) there is a very easy way to do the last side.
*heat up the blade of a knife by sticking
it into some kind of flame (I used my
stove)
*use the knife to slice away the epoxy
*the last side just peels off really
easily

3. When putting your lights back together, heat up the black shells w/ the blow dryer for a while, then push the red lens back in...This way, I got them in with minimal effort.

I wish I had pics to show you all, but alas...no digital camera (or scanner). This mod is truly one of the best for appearance...I hope these tips help whoever plans to clear their tails.

the blow dryer I have worked great...Maybe it was some obscenely powerful model...anyways, I just used the blow dryer because I didn't feel like buying a heat gun...trying to save $$ for turbo stuff.

buy and return the heat gun once you're done. (hint hint) no cost but your time and gas to get there.

My new way of doing it is not to take apart the light. Just seperate it and swap the diffuser.

I wanted to put mine in the oven, but got scared because I heard all sorts of conflicting info about time/temperature....so, it it a couple minutes at 300? Was that a pre-heated oven, or just throw them in and turn it to 300....if it really is safe, I could totally cut time down on my next set...

all ovens are different. just put them in for a couple minutes at 200-250 and see how they are. you'll be able to tell when they're hot enough, so just keep putting em in for a couple minutes at a time and raise the temp if you need to, until you figure out the right temp setting for your oven.

haha lol guys...I swear if I didn't read the thread title, I'd swear this was a thread for some kinda cooking website lol...

Diffuser is the yellow/amber piece you're gonna take out to replace with a white one in order to clear the tails...i personally like the way hp.com takes out the divider piece too...

Get a dictionary if you are really lost. I only was trying to suggest not to completely seperating the light to make it easier to put back together. You can get about a 2-3 inch gap on the bottom of the light while having it not completely seperated.

I could see that working really well, but don't you have to glue the new diffuser in?

I used some silicone adhesive to glue the new diff. into position...and that would be pretty hard to do if the light was not completely opened up.
