No air is blowing from the center console vents!

in a 92 4ws, when i change the vents to blow from defog, ground etc. nothing comes out of hte 2 middle vents in the car .. they are opened, but no air comes through.. this used to happen on and off but now no air comes through at all. it works in defog, it works in the foot vents, recirculate works, going defogt and feet works .. but nothing comes out of those 2 main vents ..

how do i go about troubleshooting this .. would something be getting in the way ? (stereo wires) A motor gone ? ..

All help and any suggestions are greatly appeciated.

I'm pretty sure the vent gates are vacuum operated. Probably an old leaky hose somewhere in there. It's starting to happen to mine occasionally also.

Others have complained about this before and it turned out that the tubes which channel the air to the vents were loose and needed to be reattached.

are there any other problems with the heating/cooling controls? try giving the console a good "technical tap" or two while its changing from heater to vent. if the vent is now open then it could be electrical.

if you pull the controls, check the 2 connectors. they are directly soldered to the pc board. if you can wobble them with minimal effort(do not force), check the connections at the board. there may be hairline cracks. all that is needed is a simple resolding job. if you heat the connections up and redistribute the solder, that should do it. if not, you may need more solder. but nothing big.

mine was doing this for awhile. i'd have to hit my dash in what looks to be furious anger everytime i wanted vents to work. then it got worse where a/c and rear defroster controls would blink and not work. then ultimately the controls would competely die.

its a quick and simple fix...but is it for you?

In mine one of the middle ones wouldn't work, I believe the left. Never fixed it.

To the person who gave me the simple fix ..

I don't have a problem doing a resoldering job, but I couldn't find a chiltons book on my lude when I looked this weekend

I don't know where to even start looking .. do I have ot pull out the console remove the shift boot etc. remove my deck and get up under there ? I don't know where the controls and everything lie and where the things would be ..

Technically tapping my dash doesn't seem to fix the problem. ITs strange, i can switch from feet to defrost and I can hear the air blow to the different areas, but it doesn't come out of the main center vents ... and when it seldom does, its not blowing very hard at all ...

Any info on how to fix this would help greatly!

that's how mine started out. its not too hard to get the console out. you'll only need to dislodge it, not remove it completely. there are 2 screws on the bottom of the heating controls that need to be removed. after that it should slide out. but getting the plugs out is a little tricky.

open up the contols and you set to check and solder if needed.
