Hello everyone,
I just found this site today because i am over here in distress about my 1996 Honda Prelude Si which the timing belt broke on last week and now I have been told by Honda that it is an interference engine and therefore the valves are bent (grrrr). Obviously I am not happy; now I need to get a used engine because i can't part with my Prelude (seriously I can't) because I love it too much. No one understands my attachment, but I have been through other cars and this car has had two problems and one was because it had to go to the body shop because a 70 yr old woman ran a red light and hit me.
My question is can I swap this engine for a V-Tech engine without too many problems? I would really appreciate any help that you can give me on this because I would hate to go through all of this and my car is still sitting in the driving looking sad. Oh yeah its a 5 speed-just in case that is important to know
Yes, it'll swap. As a matter of fact, many engines will swap into your car including a JDM H22. Hmotorsonline.com has a whole assortment, and they can help you pick what you want and get you set up with the right ECU. They've also got a pretty good reputation.
A new engine might cost between $1000 and $1500, plus labor. Don't forget to do a little reconditioning (timing belt, tensioner (if the tensioner is auto), water pump, etc) so that the 'new' engine is in tip top shape.

Actually, before you head down the wrong path, you should try something first. I would put a new timing belt on, and do a compression test. That will tell you if the valves are bent. It is possible that nothing got bent at low RPMs. If they aren't bent, you are set to go from there. If you really want an H22A swap, you can probably go ahead and do that. If you want the least amount of hassle, have a compression test done first.
