New Swap H23a1 to Jdm h22a (inernal coil) help please.
Hi everyone...Hope you can help me.
Im new to this forum and hondas in general. But I took on this project.
I did the swap. A couple things first: It's a 93 si 4ws. Prelude.
I swapped in the Jdm h22a and kept the P14 computer and used the internal coil distributor from the jdm h22a because i thought it would be a cleaner install. Car runs great in this configuration without vtec of course.
So:
I bought a P13 computer on ebay, swapped it in place of the P14 (did not hook up the vtec wiring) I just plugged it in to see if it would run any different with the p13 computer than it did with the p14.
Bad news, It started right up, hesistated upon accelleration and ran like general crap with zero power.
I have read others have had this problem. But I haven't seen a known working solution.
This is an obd1 engine, stock h23 wiring harness with all the sensors from the h23a1 changed over to the h22a.
Took the p13 back out and plugged in the p14, reset the computer and it ran great again. with no vtec of course. Im not really concerned about getting the vtec to work right now, just the engine to run well with the p13 so i can hook up the vtec at a later time.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have searched for days, this forum and many others. I have the h23a1 coil here but i dont have the distributor any more because I didnt think i would need it after it started and ran well with the jdm h22a internal coil dizzy.
One other thing: This h22a has a spool valve, but no pressure switch where you'd expect it to be. I realize some (or maybe all?) jdm's didnt use it..but is there a work around without causing a cel? Do you guys think no having the vtec wires hooked up to a4 and d6 is causing the crappy running with the p13?
Thanks a bunch!

I will try to hook up the vtec and see if that works....but what about not having the oil pressure sensor on the spool valve? Do I just hook the D6 pin on the p13 straight to ground ?
Oh, the reason I didn't do right in the first place is that I was kind of excited to "discover" the computer under the floorboard for the first time and plus, I didn't have any female pins...So I thought it would run at least as good, or better than the p14 since it was mapped for the h22. I have had the cel on with the p14 before and it still ran really good, so I didnt think that the cel would put it in limp mode.
sorry for the noob questions

your car MAY be pre-wired for vtec. I had a 93 Si that was and I also have a 94 Si (now vtec equipped :-D ) that was pre-wired. The oil pressure sensor wire was by the shock tower in it's own little plug and I had to hook up the light blue wire.
The 4ws may not be like that. Check and see if the wires run into the ECU, if they do, find them under the hood
Look at one of the plastic plugs around your abs. look for one that has a blue wire coming in it from the interior side, but a plug in it (no wire) on the engine side. it is EASY to miss
Thanks Js... I looked pretty hard for those connections, even when i had the motor out I searched for them. The other day when I took the p14 out, I glanced down at the plugs and sure enough, they were empty.. You are correct my car is a 4ws car. I don't know if that makes a difference in it being prewired or not.
Thanks for putting in the good information and the specific places to find them. Now, I do have a blue plug, but I believe (since I don't have a the wires at the computer connector) that it is the tach sensor from what my manual says...but my manual is for a 94 prelude and mine's a 93.
Still this stuff is pretty interesting...all the differences in almost identical cars!
Just got done with the wiring. What i did was jump the a4 and d6 wires together and then ran a long wire to the vtec solenoid.
It still runs like crap. It's running in some sort of protected mode because the rpms will not go past around 3k and it breakes up in a rhythmic fashion at that rpm. Also, it hesitates upon accelleration like it's starving for fuel, then suddenly gets enough and then revs up to 3k where it breaks up..
so, I don't want to jump to conclusions and say I got ripped off by an ebay seller with the p13, because it might be that I can not use the jdm distributor (internal coil) with this setup.
