I am a new member here at Preludeonline.com. I am 17 years old and I got my first sports car. First of all, I dont know much about cars and any help would be greatly appreciated! I bought the car 2-3 weeks ago for $1,500. The owner was selling it for $2,000 but we negotiated. The car was hit from the left side. The front left fender needs to replaced and I already have replaced the left side mirror which was broken off. It's a 92 Prelude SI, 5-speed. The original owner said that the original engine died out so he dropped in a another rebuilt engine. When I look on the engine, to the side I see a tag which says H23a3. I was searching online and one of the sites mentioned that it is a Accord Engine. Is this true? Or is it a prelude engine? I am thinking about getting a CarFax report on my car soon! I will be taking pictures soon and will be posting them online. Also when I got my oil changed at PepBoys, the mechanic said that my seal is leaking from the tranny. I will be getting that fixed tomorrow. Another mechanic quoted me $275, but a friend said that's too much, so I am going to try several different shops.
Could you guys please tell me what kind of engine this is and how many HP does it have stock? I believe this is from the Europe Market.
* i found out that i have 160 HP stock and it is a prelude engine and it did come in some accords in europe. Is this true? and now I have my seal leaking that goes from the tranny to the engine. I took it to a auto shop and they told me it's not big of a deal as long as i have enough transmission fluid in there and if i was to get it fixed it would cost me over a thousand dollars. Is this true? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance!!!
Sounds like its your rear main seal that leaking. It should cost anywhere from $300 - $500 to repair depending on the shop. When you repair that seal, that would be the perfect time to also look at replacing the clutch and flywheel. Same work has to be done to do both jobs. Why not just make it 1 job and cut your cost down some

Thank you all!!! I really aprreciate your guy's help and feedback! Yes, I did have that in mind about replacing the flywheel but had not thought about the clutch, but yes that is a good idea to do them all at once. Do you guys think I should get the seal fixed or just make sure I have enough transmission fluid? (like the mechanic said) What you guys think? Also In a year or so, I am thinking about dropping in a JDM H22. Should I just wait and get everything done or I will screw up my tranny before that? Well I am proud I got my membership at this forum. And I do appreciate your guys's response. Thank you petern101, chester, spin r g, and xander! I really appreciate it!
ps. I read the H23a3 vs. H23a1 thread and it seems like it has more HP than 160? Someone told me it was 160HP stock. Im still confused after reading that thread. But i do understand it was in Euro Accords and Rover 623 borrowed the engine from Honda.
The rear main seal holds back oil, not tranny fluid. There isn't really anything right there on the transmission that could leak. If you are going to do a clutch/flywheel replacement, then you're already right there to change that rear main seal. Usually I change out that rear main seal when ever I change the clutch flywheel out.

O, ok so it's not tranny fluid. And same power as the h23a1. Now everything makes more sense. Thank you very much guys!!! I really appreciate your guys's help!

p.s. Xander, you from Dallas? Im from Ft. Worth
nice deal you got there on the car!
Just keep an eye on the location for a while, if its not a bad leak then dont worry about it.. if it gets much worse then get some friends to help you out and do the fix yourself.. There are a few writeups I'm sure on replacing the clutch/flywheel, and the seal is right there so replacing it is a matter of plopping it out and a new one back in to put things simply!
