New Idea...bare with me folks

Alright...origonally I was going to do an entire swap (h23 to h22 with tranny and lsd.) Now I have been given the idea to just swap in the h22 longblock on my h23 tranny. Will this have any adverse affects? I know the gearing is shorter on the h23 but will I lose that much power? And if so, why? To put it simply, I'm just trying to give my car a little extra umph. So I figured if I am going to keep the car throughout college I mine as well get a newer engine (JDM w/ 40-50,000mi) and while I am at it I mine as well get a vtec motor; hence the h22. I'll probably throw on some simple mods I/H/E and just drive it. Will just swapping the longblock give me any more problems than doing an entire swap? Is there anything I should know. BTW, I'm also going to get a new timing belt and water pump; just to be safe. So what do you guys and gals think? Should I do the entire swap (JDM h22 w/lsd tranny)- $3600 or (h22 longblock w/ timing belt and water pump replacement)-$2100. I'm leaning towards the h22 longblock if it won't affect the durability of my engine. Thanks to all who reply.

Will there be any problems with an h22 engine and an h23 tranny?

Mechanically it should be just as good as an h22 tranny, but I believe the gearing is actually a bit taller, and will cause you to fall out of VTEC when you shift. This is what my friend told me happens to him, he's got a 5th gen with an h23 tranny in there.

So what is the difference in gear ratios? How will I fall out of VTEC?

the gear i have trouble keeping in vtec is 1st gear to 2nd gear... it just seems to drop down to 4800-5000... i always have a lighten flywheel if that helps... but i can stay in vtec in all the other gears easily...

this is a jdm h22a with h23 trans...

Yes like everyone said you will fall out of vtec on the 1-2 shift, but you can just get a vafc and lower the vtec engagment so you don't fall out going into 2nd.

So shifting at 8000 on the tach will cause you to fall out of vtec with the h23 tranny?

The 8k thing is for 5th gens. I don't think our tach is off by that much so I thing you hit the rev limiter before hitting 8k on the tach.
