new engine?

A few weeks ago my engine threw a rod, so I gotta replace it all. Now I'm about to shell out the cash to get it fixed, and I need some advice. My options are to pay around $1800-2000 to have an engine w/ 50-70k miles dropped in by a mechanic (1200-1400 for the engine), OR buy an engine from a local junk yard w/ 100k miles on it, get it dropped in by me and a friend, and end up spending only $1000-1200. The salvaged engine can be started, so I would get to hear it before I bought it. It would prob. take longer for the mechanic to fix it, b/c he is pretty busy right now. Just wonderin if there's anything really wrong w/ throwin a salvaged engine in myself since I'm tight on cash?

I would look into a JDM H22 w/out the tranny. You should be able to get one for about $1,700 plus shipping.

At least that way you got a decent motor.

If I could get an H22 decently cheap, how involved of a swap is it? If going from H23 to a H22 isn't too hard or too expensive, it might be a good choice! Also, what's the specs on the JDM H23? I got one available w/ less than 30k miles for $2000. Sound good?

Ok, I checked out a local guy that sells engines, and here's what he has:
Used JDM H23 : $2050
Used JDM H22 : $1350
Used H22 computer : $175

So.....if the swap isn't too hard, I might just swap in the H22! I'm lookin at the writeups, but from experience, is it too hard to do in a garage, from anyone's experience?
Also, what about using the H23 tranny w/ the H22? I've heard it's better and it's worse. Which is it?

Ok, gonna do the JDM H22 swap, few things I need to clear up...
-The wiring shouldn't be too hard to rig to work, right?
-Will the engine ping, since jap engines are made to run on 100+ octane gas?
-Nothing else is needed besides the engine, my old tranny & stuff, and the tools/garage to do it?
-The motor mounts will work on the H22, w/o moving?

The wiring is pretty simple, just add a couple wires. The engine won't ping, Absolut has a JDM H22 in California, the highest octane we can get is 91, he doesn't ping. The motor mounts will fit perfectly with no modification.

Won't ping because of the knock sensor. The ecu will just retard the timing a bit. Ryan knows about those pesky knock sensors.
