shift linkage isn't completely adjustable, how much pressure does it take to hold it in gear?

Check to see if the cable shifter connection is secure on top of the transaxle. The ends of the cables are circular and have holes in them (2 shifter cables - one hole in each circular end) and are attached to the mechanical shifter on top of the transaxle. They are held in by small cotter pins (hair pins). You can locate them under the intake piping/tubing. If thats not it, it could be possible that your 5th gear synchro assembly is worn out. I worked on a prelude which had this problem in 3rd gear. Turned out to be a worn 3rd gear synchro assembly.
