Need help, what to do with my Lude (car noob)

sup PO, I bought a 95 h22 vtec not long ago and its been just sitting on my driveway. other car is a 94 accord f22 non-vtec.

Lude's in pretty rough shape and I'm not sure where to start with it...only things so far is ive changed a few lights, wipers and changed the oil. the other fluids look okay...and im about to order NGK plugs, NGK wires, h23 manual tensioner conversion kit, mitsuboshi timing belt and GMB water pump, thats like $230.

my only concern under the hood is this sound thats coming from in/around the engine block... its a loud clicking sound and ive sort of isolated the sound around the t-belt housing but im not exactly sure and it has no connection with RPMs/revving. the engine sounds like it skips a beat every now and again..something to do with timing? thats why I ordered a manual tensioner kit hoping if I change that it goes away.

should I take the valve cover off and have a look? also how hard is a valve adjustment? and how hard would the h23 tensioner conversion be? I have all the tools needed, I just need to try it...and if I get stuck I have a couple friends with ludes who could help.

lastly, if it is the tensioner, what damage could it have done? im hoping nothing got f*kd up too bad.

mate, if you are a car noob, like you said, please do not adjust valves or replace timing belt by yourself. Don't even let your buddies do it. Take it to a pro.

how do I learn then? ask a pro to show me? I know a guy actually around my age (18, I think he's 20) I just need to get in contact with him...my moms friend's son who has a 4th gen lude and is a auto service tech. perfect opportunity right there...

anyways I took the valve cover off today on my lude just for fun and put it back. also changed spark plug wires on my other car...

my facial expression

awesome experience nonetheless, I need mooooorrre.

I'm assuming you replaced the old valve cover gasket and sealed the arches? Every time you take valve cover off, the gasket should be trashed and a new one needs to be put in.

But you said you wanted to learn, the best place is forums and internet. Then it's all about going out there and doing it yourself and having your own style.

now most 3rd and 4th gen ludes are also known to have an annoying tap because of the lifters.. make sure the lifters are not tapping

I didn't replace those but I made sure it all lined up when I put it back on, it looks sealed good to me...will replace AsaP though.

two of the valve cover bolts were already loose enough to twist by hand.

And yeah thats right, I do want to learn because spending 2-3x the cost of the parts for labour isn't appealing when I could do it myself and feel good about it. Then I could put that money I saved towards other things for my car...or to fix my screw ups...and not the expensive kind of screw ups.

I was told the h22's dont have lifters...so I crossed that off my list of possibilities.
