Nasty rear window trim? How I painted mine

My rear window trim was disgusting. The plastic was peeling off and the metal was rusting.

So what I did was cuz the peeling plastic off with a utility knife then I sanded down the metal with my Dremel and a sanding wheel to get all the surface rust off. Here is a closeup of the sanded and rusty areas:

Full shot of where I started peeling off the plastic and sanding:

I sanded down the whole trim:

After sanding, I wiped down the area with a rag to get all the dust off. It was really dusty. The rust flies all over the place when you sand it. Prepping sucks. Since the trunk is open and the arms are in the way, you have to cover them from overspray.

I used a can of glossy black Rustoleum cuz thats all I had at the moment (I didn't really plan this out when I did it... I just did it). I let it dry overnight and it came out pretty good. I still have to take all the tape off.

Finished:

Oh yea, remember to remove the trunk light or it will stay on

I did the exact same thing! Using the thread you posted a while back about spraypainting the rear quarter window trims, I used it for all of my trim. I used Satin Black Rust-Oleum however, but I'm happy with the results. Your's are looking great as well

Why don't you guys save yourself the work and just buy a new trim piece?

Oh and a piece of advice: if you're going to use newspaper to cover up the windows and other body panels to prevent overspray, make sure you triple layer it. Otherwise the spraypaint will go right through the newspaper. Also, use masking tape - either painter's masking tape (blue) or regular manila masking tape.

Cuz I'm broke

plus buying it doesn't give you the satisfaction of having fixed it yourself

I was worried that it wouldn't fit properly when I reinstalled it.

hey, were you able to slide the overspray paper under it so it was above and below the piece, or did you just tape a piece above it to protect the glass and tape a piece below it to protect the trunk channels etc?

I just taped it over the piece and covered the rest with bags and that paper
