My prelude cranks but doesnt start! help please

Okay i have a prelude si 94 with a h23a 5 speed. the body has around 160,000 miles. anyways all the sudden my car doesent start.

The weird thing is that is does start sometimes, and at other not start at all (and what i mean by start is ignitie, she cranks up fine)

I dont understand, all the electric throught the car like radio and door locks work fine but it just wont fire up.

At first I suspected the spark plugs but I changed them out today and the car still randomly does not fire up... and to clarify, it started when I was leaving my house to school and then 5 hours later, after class the car doesnt ignitie....

My friend suspects the ecu, what do you guys think? I dont think its a relay or anything because "techincally" wouldent that not work all the time if its broken? same with fuses, but what about the ecu? has anyone had this problem? please any input would be great thanks guys!

Sounds like a bad main relay. If the check engine light doesn't turn off, a couple seconds after you turn the key to the on postion, then that's it. It's very common on our Preludes. The lines in the relay crack from hot and cold cycles and cause it to fail.

Have you checked the ignition leads?

After removing and re-installing my leads after a compression test the car started great but then on second try it just cranked, very intermittent after that!

I basically removed the ditributor cap and with a meter did a continuity test between distributor pins (on inside) and end of each lead. One failed and luckily it was just a bad connection on the distributor end. Firmed everything up and works great.

Worth a check if you haven't already. Could also be something with the metal casing inside one of the leads that has bad connection with plug. Long shot i know, but i like to try the easy stuff first before spending lots!

The only reason i said check leads is that the engine is not firing. Push starting the car is not going to fire up the car if there is no spark getting through! Poss bad (hit and miss) connection.

Normally you would push start in order to crank the engine, you still need a spark, air, and fuel to combust!

Could be anything from the distributor cap, rotor arm, leads or plugs. Did you get your new relay?

Like everyone else has already suggested, you should check the relay.

Here's how: Removing aftermarket alarm

Did you check all your grounds for erosion, corrosion, or just bad connections?
